IIT Roorkee and Niigata University Launch Double PhD Program to Foster Global Research Collaboration

IIT Roorkee and Niigata University have launched a Double Ph.D. Program aimed at strengthening academic collaboration between India and Japan.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and Niigata University, Japan, have launched a Double Ph.D. Program, ushering in a new era of international academic collaboration between India and Japan. The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Prof. Matsuo Masayuki, Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology at Niigata University.

The MoU discussions were initiated following the visit of Prof. Tatsuo Ushiki, President of Niigata University, to IIT Roorkee, where conversations with the institute’s leadership reinforced a shared commitment to strengthening academic ties. Furthering this engagement, a delegation from IIT Roorkee including Prof. K.K. Pant (Director), Prof. Vimal Chandra Srivastava (Dean, International Relations), Prof. Akshay Dvivedi (Dean, Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy), Prof. Sandeep Singh (Department of Earth Sciences), and Prof. P. Gopinath (Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering) visited Niigata University to explore strategic collaborations, deepen academic partnerships, and establish a strong foundation for this transformative initiative.

The collaboration spans a wide range of cutting-edge research areas, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, energy systems and renewable technologies, sustainability and climate change, advanced materials and nanotechnology, earthquake engineering, water resources and hydrology, information and communication engineering, biosciences and biotechnology, robotics and automation, disaster resilience and mitigation, and earth and environmental sciences. By combining expertise, the program aims to tackle critical global challenges through joint research and innovation.

Double PhD Program

This program allows doctoral students to earn degrees from both IIT Roorkee and Niigata University, providing exceptional opportunities for academic and research excellence. It promotes student and researcher exchanges, granting access to diverse educational resources, world-class mentorship, and a global perspective while fostering holistic development among scholars. The Double Degree Program paves the way for students to undertake high-impact research while contributing to the academic and scientific communities of both India and Japan.
