IIT Roorkee Hosts National Conclave on Sustainable Energy Solutions

IIT Roorkee: The Center for Sustainable Energy at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee hosted the National Conclave on “Sustainable Energy in Sanatan Bharat: Roadmap for Viksit Bharat@2047”, emphasizing how ancient Indian wisdom on environmental harmony and circularity can offer enduring guidance for achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 and shaping India’s long-term energy future.

The conclave convened over 150 participants, including policymakers, researchers, academicians, and thought leaders. Two engaging panel discussions delved into the relevance of traditional Indian sustainable practices and their integration into India’s modern roadmap for clean and inclusive energy development.

The Chief Guest, Ritu Khanduri, Speaker of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, stressed the importance of sensitizing students and local communities on climate responsibility and building the foundation for a sustainable Viksit Bharat. “The Center for Sustainable Energy is dedicated to achieving sustainable development in Viksit Bharat. I wish them all the success,” she remarked.

Prof. U.P. Singh, Officiating Director, IIT Roorkee highlighted the institute’s commitment to national energy priorities., “At IIT Roorkee, we believe that sustainable development must emerge from the confluence of science, policy, and heritage. The Center for Sustainable Energy exemplifies this vision by developing low- and zero-carbon technologies while drawing inspiration from India’s timeless traditions. Our commitment is not only to innovation but also to shaping a future that is resilient, inclusive, and self-reliant.”

Prof. Soumitra Satapathi, Head, the Center for Sustainable Energy and Convener of this conclave said, “Sanatan Bharat had an ancient tradition of protecting the environment and concept of building sustainability. This national conclave will provide a roadmap for developing Viksit Bharat by taking key teachings from Sanatan Bharat.”

The event underscored IIT Roorkee’s pioneering role in blending traditional knowledge systems with modern scientific approaches to tackle global sustainability challenges. Through the Center for Sustainable Energy, the institute remains at the forefront of fostering innovation, inclusivity, and environmentally responsible solutions aligned with India’s Viksit Bharat@2047 vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
