AADTA, DUTA Leaders Call for Probe into Shahid Bhagat Singh College Principal Over Discrimination Allegations
The issue surfaced after a Scheduled Caste (SC) student reportedly accused the college principal of physical assault and issuing threats of dire consequences.
The Academics for Action and Development Teachers' Association (AADTA), alongside the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) and other executive committee members, has written to the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, demanding a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into serious allegations of caste-based discrimination at Shahid Bhagat Singh College (SBS).
The issue surfaced after a Scheduled Caste (SC) student reportedly accused the college principal of physical assault and issuing threats of dire consequences. According to the letter, the incident has created widespread outrage, with teachers and student bodies condemning the alleged behavior as a blatant violation of the university's commitment to equality and inclusivity.
The associations’ letter underscored broader concerns, claiming that the principal has fostered a hostile academic environment since assuming office. “The principal has consistently targeted teaching and non-teaching staff belonging to deprived communities and adopted punitive measures against them. This incident is a reflection of his deeply prejudiced attitude towards individuals from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC),” the letter alleged.
Highlighting the gravity of the matter, the associations noted that such acts of discrimination undermine the university's standing as a premier institution and damage its reputation both nationally and internationally. They warned that the alleged caste-based atrocity could deter students from marginalized communities from pursuing education at Delhi University.
AADTA, DUTA, and other signatories emphasized their commitment to creating a discrimination-free campus and upholding the principles of social justice. “We strongly condemn any form of discrimination, especially when it targets students from socially and economically weaker sections. Educational institutions must serve as equalizers, providing platforms for growth and opportunity for all,” the letter read.
To ensure a fair and unbiased investigation, the associations demanded that the principal be placed on leave during the inquiry. They called on the university administration to act decisively and transparently, stressing that such actions are necessary to rebuild trust and uphold the values of inclusion and equality.
“We request an impartial inquiry to uncover the facts and urge the university to take strict action if the allegations are proven true. Delhi University must reaffirm its commitment to inclusivity and ensure that marginalized students and staff feel safe and valued within its campuses,” the letter concluded.
The matter has sparked widespread debate, with several student and teacher organizations calling for immediate intervention to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future. The associations urged the Vice Chancellor to treat this case with utmost urgency, reflecting the institution’s resolve to stand against caste-based discrimination and harassment.
