Know all the details for admission to M Tech Computer Science and Information Technology through GATE 2023 here.

Know details about pursuing MTech in Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT) through GATE 2023 here.

Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT) are branches that sound synonymous but in reality, serve different objectives. Moreover, another misconception that CS has wider scope over IT is absolutely false. The two branches have equal scope and professionals trained into any of the two are equally employable in IT and software companies. As far as the difference between the two branches is concerned, computer science is the study of computing principles and how computers can assist in solving problems. On the other hand, IT deals with the study of technology/tools helpful in meeting the information management needs of a particular organisation.

A degree in Computer Science Engineering or Information Technology leads to a job in one of the most reputed companies across the globe. However, MTech or postgraduate engineering degree in CS or IT opens job avenues in companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple etc. For admission to MTech courses of India’s top engineering colleges, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is the top choice among aspirants. GATE 2023 is scheduled to be conducted on February 4, 5, 11, and 12, 2023.

Scope of Computer Science and Information Technology

With the establishment of over 1,000 global delivery centres in more than 80 countries across the globe, Indian IT & ITES companies are at a pinnacle of growth, suggests various industry reports. The globally recognised Indian IT services sector has emerged as the largest sourcing destination accounting for a massive market share of US$ 185-190 billion global services, which is around 56% of the market share in the global services sourcing industry (highest in the world). Along with the private sector, various Public Sector Units (PSUs) like IOCL, ONGC, POSOCO, WBSEDCL and DRDO etc. accept the GATE score for recruitment of candidates in various positions. There is a great scope of job avenues in the following profiles for computer/IT engineers in India and abroad:

Q:   For how many papers can one student apply in GATE 2024?
A:
Students applying for GATE 2024 can opt for two subject papers from the prescribed set of combinations. Earlier, the candidates could apply to appear in only one subject. As a candidate is allowed to appear in only two papers (only approved set) of the 29 papers for which the GATE 2024 will be conducted, they have to carefully make a choice of the papers they wish to write. A candidate is expected to appear in the papers appropriate to the discipline of his or her qualifying degree. However, he or she is free to choose any paper according to his or her admission plan, keeping in mind the GATE eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he or she wishes to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteria at any particular institute, the candidate is advised to refer to the websites of that institute. Those candidates opting for two paper combinations for GATE 2024 have a primary choice of paper as their default choice. The second choice of paper has to be chosen from the allowed combinations. Listed combinations are only allowed, and those that are not listed are not allowed. For more detail Read: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-pattern.
Q:   After declining/rejecting the offer, can I be considered for subsequent offers for COAP rounds?
A:

After declining/rejecting the offer (s) in a particular round, you will not be considered for the same offer (s). In case, you have given higher preferences in M.Tech. Application, then you may be considered for the higher preferences in the subsequent round (s) of offers based on the availability of vacancies and merit list, within the rules of that institute. Also, after the last/final round at COAP no offers will be available at COAP. For any offer/admission related matter, candidates must visit the respective Academic Institutes Admission Portal.

Q:   What are passing marks in GATE exam?
A:

Passing marks in GATE exam is different for all 30 papers. The GATE qualifying mark for PSUs recruitment is also different. Candidates appearing in any GATE paper have to obtain the minimum mark in order to be declared qualified for the exam. Only qualified candidates are considered for admission to MTech/MSc/PhD programs and the MHRD scholarship. Candidates can check the previous year GATE cutoff for various papers on the Shiksha page or from the GATE official website.
