Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is it wise to focus only on the GATE high-weightage topics in preparation?
A:

No, doing this can be one of the harmful decisions that you are going to make in your GATE preparation. Instead, give attention to all the topics and chapters equally. You can start with the high-weightage topics and chapters in GATE first, but also try to give at least an hour per day to go through the lower weightage topics. Look for what sort of questions are asked in previous years, whether they are theoretical or numerically-based. Prepare according to that. By doing this, you are exercising a balanced GATE preparation.

Q:   Who is the GATE 2026 topper of CSE branch?
A:

The GATE 2026 topper will be released after the declaration of result. The authorities will publish the topper's list (AIR 1 ) of all 30 subjects.

Last year, Rahul Kumar Singh was the GATE CS topper scoring full marks in GATE 2025.

Q:   How much marks is 500 GATE score?
A:

A GATE score of 500 can be roughly around 40 to 50 raw scores out of 100 marks. However, it can vary depending for each engineering discipline. For example, for CSE it can be around 45 to 56 marks, for mechanical engineering it can correspond around 46 - 55, and for ECE it can roughly correspond around 50 to 60 marks depending on the paper difficulty level.

Q:   Are previous year GATE papers helpful in preparation for the exam?
A:

Surely, GATE previous year papers are very useful in preparation for the exam. It will help in understanding the overall exam structure, paper pattern and subejct-wise weightage of topics. Every GATE aspirant must solve GATE previous year papers.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   What are the most important GATE Civil Engineering topics to score 60+ marks in GATE?
A:

Important topics to score 60+ marks in GATE CE are as follows -

  • Environmental engineering carry around 10 to 12 marks
  • Geotechnical Engineering carry around 13 marks
  • Fluid mechanics and OCF carry 7 to 8 marks
Q:   Will I get scribble pad to do rough work in GATE exam?
A:

Yes, candidates will get a scribble pad in the GATE exam 2026 to do the rough work. Candidates have to write their name and registration number on the scribble pad before using it. However, the rough sheet must be returned after the completion of the exam.

Q:   What is the ideal time to start GATE preparation?
A:

There is no ideal time to start the GATE preparation. Start early (from the first year itself). It is mainly because your bachelor's topics and chapters have the most weightage in the GATE question paper. The topics that are taught in your third year are the backbone. If you are clear with the fundamentals and concepts (taught in classes), then you do not require extra time to prepare for GATE. Just revise and practice questions. That's enough.

So, start preparing for GATE right from the first year. Your brain is fresh with the concepts and formulas, thus making it easy to solve the questions and prepare for the exam.

GATE CSE Vs DA: How many students register and appear

GATE CSE Vs GATE DA: Job Opportunities and Career Scope

Both disciplines have their own benefits. After qualifying for GATE, candidates can either opt for MTech degree and look for jobs at PSUs or MNCs.

GATE MTech admissions

  • A GATE CSE score is widely accepted in various specialisations and computer science programs at top institutions, such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc.

  • On the other hand, a GATE DA score is usually restricted to AI, Data Science, and Cognitive Systems-related branches.

A candidate with an MTech degree in CSE has more flexibility, as he/she can later take special elective courses in AI/ML to enhance their skills.

Job Opportunities

  • A MTech CSE graduate can get into jobs like database engineer, software developer engineer, or network engineer.

  • A MTech degree in DA can lead to jobs like AI researcher, Data Science Engineer, Machine Learning Expert, etc.

GATE PSU Jobs

A qualifying GATE score provides candidates with an option to apply for public sector undertakings (PSU jobs).

  • GATE CSE degree students are highly recruited by top PSUs such as ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, etc.

  • For GATE Data Science branch, the chances are low, as it is a newly introduced subject.
