What is CSE and DA in GATE Exam?

In the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, CSE stands for Computer Science and Information Technology. It is also called as CS. GATE Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) is considered a highly competitive subject. GATE CS is specially designed for students who has mainly a computer science or IT background. 

While DA in GATE, stands for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. This GATE paper was introduced in 2024, and has gained popularity in a short span of time. GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) is a highly specialised paper that is more focused on Mathematics and Machine Learning.

GATE 2027 Syllabus Changes in Computer Science and Data Science

IIT Madras, the conducting body of GATE 2027, revised the syllabus for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. For CSE subject, the core topics- digital logic, COA, and computer networks. However, there is no change in GATE Data Science and Artificial Intelligence syllabus.

GATE CSE Vs DA: Eligibility Criteria

To appear for GATE computer science or data science, candidates need to meet the following -

• Must be in BTech 3rd year or final year in the relevant branch/discipline
• Candidates who have qualified BTech can also apply
• There is no age or attempt limit to appear for GATE exam.

GATE CSE Vs GATE DA: Syllabus Breakdown

The major difference between both the subject syllabus is: 

• GATE CSE syllabus is broadly inclined to foundational software and hardware engineering. 

• While GATE Data Science syllabus is highly maths and application-focused. 

If you are planning to appear for both papers through GATE two-paper combination, then one can opt for this option, as 60 to 80% of syllabus overlap with each other, making it more feasible to prepare. • GATE CSE include discrete mathematics, while GATE Data Science and AI, include optimisation and deeper statistics and estimation. 

• GATE CS core covers topics, such as digital logic, computer organisation, OS, Computer Networks, Theory of Computation, Compilers, etc. which are absent in GATE DA syllabus. 

• GATE DA syllabus has a major chunk of topics, such as fundamentals of AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, which are absent in GATE CSE exam syllabus. 

• While GATE CS syllabus include topic DBMS. GATE Data Science include DBMS + Data Warehousing.
