GATE 2026 Predictions

  • If the number of registered candidates in GATE 2026 increases, then the chances of competition are expected to get high
  • If the exam paper is tough, then the cutoff will decrease and vice versa.
  • There may be a slight change in the GATE 2026 seat matrix due to the introduction of the DA paper last year. Also, the number of registered candidates in DA in 2025 increased compared to 2024.

Factors determining GATE 2026 Cutoff

GATE is one of the major exams for postgraduate courses in India. It is highly competitive, with over 8 lac students registering annually. Many factors will drive the GATE 2026 cut-off, such as-

Number of candidates

The number of candidates appearing for the GATE 2026 exam will greatly impact the cut-off. Some Engineering branches are more demanding than others, so the competition for those branches is higher than for other branches. This leads to higher cut-offs in those GATE papers. For example, the number of candidates appearing for the Computer Science and Information Technology (CS & IT) paper is higher than the number of candidates for other papers, so the GATE CS cut-off could also go higher, considering other factors. This year, the GATE 2026 DA paper is expected to be on the difficulty side, as the number of applicants are increasing.

Number of Seats Available

Candidates must know that the GATE cut-off is not similar to the cut-off for admission to a particular institute, such as IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, etc. These institutes release their cut-off for admission to courses offered to GATE-qualified candidates. Seat availability is a crucial factor behind the admission cut-off of the particular institute. Candidates should understand that the fewer seats available, the higher the cut-off may be.

Difficulty Level of Exam

The difficulty level of the GATE question paper affects the cut-off. Candidates must know that for easier question papers, most candidates will be able to score well, and the cut-off will be high, and vice versa for difficult papers.

Category of Candidate

Candidates must know that the GATE cut-off rank for 2026 will vary for different categories. As per previous trends, the open category have the highest cut-off, and SC/ ST/ PwD has the lowest cut-off. Candidates must consider the impact of the category on the cut-off rank for different institutes such as IITs, NITs, and IIITs.

GATE 2026 Cutoff: Difference between Qualifying and Admission Cutoff

Candidates need to understand the difference between admission and qualifying cutoff. The GATE qualifying cutoff is the institute eligibility cutoff, while the GATE admission cutoff ensures a call for admission at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. The conducting authority releases the qualifying GATE cutoff, available on GOAPS. On the other hand, the participating institutes release the admission cutoffs, which are available on their respective counselling portals- CCMTCOAP.

Qualifying GATE cutoffs

Admission GATE cutoffs

Also known as the eligibility cutoff for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, it is the minimum marks a candidate must score to be eligible for admission.

It is the final opening and closing ranks score fixed by the participating institutes to select candidates.

Meeting the qualifying cutoff does not mean the candidate will be selected for admission.

Meeting the admission GATE cutoff does not mean the candidate will be selected.

It is announced by the conducting IIT and is available on GOAPS

It is released by individual participating institutes and available on their respective counselling portal: CCMT/COAP.

It includes qualifying marks for each paper

It includes opening and closing ranks for courses offered at participating institutes.
