Thane’s Rounak Majumdar, CAT 2018 topper, believes the key to success his success in the exam was mock tests and since CAT is a test of aptitude, intelligence and application of knowledge, time management is important.
Rounak is currently working in an America based international financial firm in Delhi NCR. The 22-year old is a voracious reader and loves science fiction. He started his preparation of CAT exam in August 2018 and would study for 2-3 hours a day. Rounak's CAT scores are given below:
Explore colleges based on CAT
- Overall CAT 2018 percentile: 100
- VARC percentile: 99.95
- DILR percentile: 99.98
- QA percentile: 100
Talking to media, he said, “My entire preparation was based on taking mock tests. I attempted two mock tests every week and around 40 mock tests in a year. I used to do practice tests on the weekends and analyse my results during the week. Analysing mock tests are more important than actually appearing for them; it helped me understand my shortfalls and device a test strategy.”
Rounak attempted about 30-35 mock tests, with the aim to familiarize himself with the CAT exam pattern. He made sure he didn’t overdo it to feel burned out.
“Time management is the key. One should approach the easy questions first and maintain accuracy while gaining speed,” he added.
Rounak an IIT Kanpur alumnus, has also completed CFA Level 1. He believes he is fortunate that none of the sections of CAT syllabus was his weakness, although he did feel he could increase his speed in LRDI. For that, he worked upon identifying easier sets and finding strategies to solve question with greater speed and accuracy. His LRDI percentile is 99.98.
His VARC and Quant preparation was all about clarifying fundamental mistakes first and then increasing set-solving speed. Rounak firmly believes that mock tests conducted by reputed coaching institutions is a must for all CAT aspirants. Mock tests not only prepare a candidate for the worst, but also help them analyse where they stand with respect to other candidates. He is targeting IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore and FMS-Delhi.
