UCEED 2021 was held on January 17. Go through UCEED 2021 exam analysis to know about the difficulty level and test pattern of the exam.
UCEED, the Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design, conducted by the Industrial Design Centre of IIT Bombay probably marked the beginning of the offline exams in the series of competitive examinations to be held in 2021, post-pandemic. In keeping with the new normal, the aspirants were asked to report well ahead of time, with a Covid negative self-declaration form, following all the Covid safety protocols. Social distancing was strictly adhered to with complete care on sanitisation as the Part A of the exam was conducted in CBT (Computer Based Test) mode. UCEED was among few examinations that managed to stick to its scheduled timeline right from the stage of form release to conducting the examination, inspite of the pandemic and disturbed academic calendar in general which has affected almost all the examinations.
Another laudable factor is the advancement of the form filling stage which has now been advanced to March 13 March from the earlier June schedule.
The examination itself was in keeping with its ongoing format of 3-hour duration, which is further divided into two parts A & B. While part A, worth 240 marks, was held in CBT mode for the duration of 2.5 hours, the part B, worth 60 marks, was a paper-based drawing test for 30 minutes duration.

UCEED 2021 Part A Exam Analysis
Part A was subdivided into three sections, following the pattern as prior.
- Section One, was the NAT, having 18 questions with a marking of +4 / -0 for each question without negative marking.
- Section Two was MSQ (Multiple Selection Questions) comprising 18 questions with a +4/ -0.19 marking pattern.
- Section Three comprised of 32 questions in Multiple Choice format with a marking of +3/ -0.71.
Some of the questions asked in UCEED 2021 Part A exam were from the below-mentioned topics:
| Area Calculation |
Unique Pattern Identification |
| Counting Surfaces |
Repeated Patterns |
| Form Viewership |
Logo Identification |
| Series Completion |
Visual Puzzles |
| Special Recognition |
Spot The Differences |
| Colour Mixing |
Font Identification and Classification |
| Visual Analysis |
Image Rotation |
| Mirror Image & Water Image |

About 95% of the paper was visual-based this year. This in itself is always a challenge in the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode where the students have to give undivided attention to the screen. However, the overall exam level was more doable than the last year.
UCEED 2021 Part B Exam Analysis
Immediately, thereafter, the 2.5 hours of CBT, the students had to switch to the Paper Based Test (PBT) mode for their drawing exam. The switch was so sudden and seamless that some students found themselves flummoxed with it, taking a little while to mentally switching their mode. It was for 30 minutes and 60 marks.
This segment comprised of a single drawing question on space design in perspective as per the specifics outlined in the question. The students were asked to make a living room, from their perspective while they are inside the room. The room was to have sunlight coming in from the window with the reflection of the shadow on the east side. A total of 3 planters were to be placed with two on the window sill and the third anywhere inside the room. A Tea set had to be placed on a side table with a newspaper beside it. While attempting this question, it was important to consider the directions. The drawing could have been made in either 1 point perspective or 2 point perspective. Light and shade had to be important considerations with the focus on rendering in black and white. The material renderings like fabric for curtain and upholstery, porcelain for a tea set, wood to the table, and the newspaper had to be considered and yes, we didn’t have to make ourselves in it.
UCEED results are expected on March 10, 2021. Following the scores, the merit will be drawn and the calls sent out.
Wishing All the Luck once again!

No, you cannot get into IIT Bombay with a UCEED cutoff rank of 20 for the BDes course. IIT Bombay 2026 admission closed at a cutoff rank of 14 for B.Des in the General category under the AI quota. Hence, candidates must target a lower cutoff rank than 2020 to secure a B.Des seat at this college.
