IIT Kanpur's NICEE Hosts 16th Annual Earthquake Safety Quiz for Schools
IIT Kanpur's NICEE hosted the 16th annual Earthquake Safety Quiz competition, bringing together schools to promote awareness and understanding of earthquake safety.
The National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering (NICEE) at IIT Kanpur hosted its 16th annual Inter-School Quiz Competition on Earthquake Safety, with Gwalior Glory High School clinching the championship title. The final round saw the participation of seven esteemed schools from across North India, highlighting IIT Kanpur's dedication to fostering earthquake safety awareness among the younger generation.
The competition, based on NICEE's comprehensive publication "IITK-BMTPC Earthquake Tips" by Prof. CVR Murty, featured four challenging rounds - Round Robin, Picture Round, Rapid Fire Round, and Lucky Number Round. Seven elite schools participated in the finals, with Gwalior Glory High School, Gwalior clinching first place, followed by Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan's Prism School, Satna, and Sheiling House School, Kanpur in second and third positions respectively.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Durgesh C. Rai highlighted the crucial role of young minds in disseminating earthquake safety awareness throughout their communities. He emphasized how such educational initiatives contribute to developing effective damage mitigation strategies at the grassroots level.

Launched in 2009, the quiz competition has grown into a key annual event in NICEE's outreach program. The selection process kicks off in March, with participating schools receiving 50 copies of an earthquake safety publication to prepare their four-member teams. This year's event was expertly coordinated by the NICEE team, under the leadership of Cdr. Suresh Ailawadi (Retd.), along with Shivesh Pandey, Shradha Shukla, and Moti Lal. This initiative remains a crucial platform for raising seismic safety awareness among school students, supporting NICEE's mission to broaden earthquake safety knowledge throughout India.
