The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, in partnership with Queen’s University, Canada, hosted the inaugural International Symposium on Innovative Design for Excellence, Affordability, and Sustainability (IDEAS-2024). Drawing over 150 researchers, academicians, and students from countries including India, Nepal, Canada, South Africa, and the Netherlands, the event highlighted global collaboration in advancing innovation and sustainability.

With a focus on design excellence and impactful solutions, the symposium reinforced IIT Roorkee’s leadership in addressing global challenges. Mansukhbhai Prajapati, the rural innovator behind Mitti Cool, was the Chief Guest, while Prof. Heidi Ploeg, Chair for Women in Engineering at Queen's University, attended as the Guest of Honour.

IDEAS 2024

IDEAS brought together top experts in design and innovation, featuring distinguished speakers like Dr. Sougata Karmakar from IIT Guwahati, Prof. S.K. Saha from IIT Delhi, and Prof. Khanjan Mehta from Lehigh University, USA. The sessions covered a wide range of topics, from frugal innovation to the role of public policy in resource-limited societies, showcasing the significant impact of innovative design on sustainable development.

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, of IIT Roorkee, highlighted the symposium’s role in shaping the future of global innovation and said, "At IIT Roorkee, we are committed to fostering an innovative ecosystem that not only advances scientific knowledge but also addresses the pressing needs of society. IDEAS-2024 is a testament to our vision of driving sustainable development through global collaboration and innovative solutions. This symposium marks a significant step in realizing our goal of creating technologies that improve lives, particularly in resource-constrained settings."

Reflecting on the event, Prof. Heidi Ploeg praised IIT Roorkee’s inclusive approach, "IIT Roorkee’s focus on diversity and inclusion in research and education is truly commendable. Initiatives like IDEAS-2024 create a platform where innovation thrives through collaboration, making it possible to address critical global challenges together."

Chief Guest Mansukhbhai Prajapati shared, "Innovation begins with solving problems that impact people’s lives directly. A:

By paying a total tuition fee amount of INR 8 lakh, students have the opportunity to score salary packages up to INR 27.94 LPA (the highest salary package during 2023 placements). Further, the average and median package offered during IIT Roorkee placement process of 2023 stood at INR 18.34 LPA and INR 18.09 LPA. In terms of ROI, the deal looks decent. In addition to this, the college ranks under the top 10 best institutes in the country for Engineering by NIRF 2022. Hence, BTech from IIT Roorkee is a good idea.
