NID Entrance Exam Syllabus

Q. Can one study master's degree in design after doing engineering?

A. Yes, a candidate can pursue master’s degree in design after completing bachelor’s degree in any field. In order to join Design institutes candidates are required to clear the Design course entrance exams. The Design entrance exams usually test a candidate’s language skills, quantitative and reasoning aptitude along with design aptitude.

BTech or B.E. candidates are given priority during admission in Design colleges in some fields such as industrial design.

Q. Who is eligible for BTech in fashion technology?

A, Candidates who have completed class 12th with main subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or candidates who have completed diploma in any engineering branch are eligible to apply for BTech in Fashion Technology.

Suggestion: Students who have completed their 12th standard in arts, commerce or science stream can apply for Bachelors of Design course.

A. Many colleges offering Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) course admit students on the basis of their 12th standard marks. Students have to register on the respective college websites in order to apply for BFA course.

Some colleges provide admission to candidates through entrance exams such as CUET, PUBDET and NSD Entrance Exam.

Q. Is the NID DAT exam very difficult to crack?

A. NID DAT, along with NIFT and UCEED are among the most competitive national-level entrance exams in the country. The fact that there are only 425 seats for the B. Des and 347 seats for the M.Des programme makes it very competitive.

But that being said, if the candidate prepares well and with the correct strategy, then the NID DAT exam can be cracked. Among the first things the candidate needs to do is prepare a efficient study timetable, get familiar with the syllabus and pattern, and use good books as reference material.

Q. When will the NID DAT 2025 Prelims exam be conducted?

A. The National Institute of Design (NID) will conduct the DAT Prelims exam on January 5, 2025.

The B.Des exam will be held from 10 am - 1 pm; meanwhile, the M.Des exam will be held from 10 am - 12.30 am.

The DAT Prelims for the B.Des programme will be conducted in a paper-and-pencil/pen mode. The question paper may  incude both textual and visual questions. Other details like duration of the exam, marking scheme, etc. will be published in the DAT Prelims admit card.

The candidate needs to report for the exam at 8 am. Gates closing time is 9.30 am. 

The DAT Prelims exam for the M.Des programme will be conducted offline and include a mix of objective and subjective questions. The paper will have a total of 100 questions.

Q. What is the eligibility criteria for NIFT 2025?

A. The eligibility criteria may differ depending on the course opted by the candidate. For instance, candidates seeking admission to the B. Des course needs to have passed 10+2 exam from a recognised institute and should be less than 24 years as of August 1, 2025.

Relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit applies for candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD candidates.

Q. What is NIFT lateral entry admission (NLEA) scheme?

A. NIFT Lateral Entry Admission (NLEA) provides an opportunity to candidates who have completed their Diploma in relevant or related fields of Design & Technology for direct admission to the third semester of UG programmes of NIFT. 

Eligible candidates have to appear in the NIFT 2025 entrance exam to get lateral admission. Admission under lateral entry scheme will be strictly on merit of NIFT 2025 exam, which will include written examination, studio test/ technology aptitude test, and a personal interview. 

Candidates selected through lateral entry will join the regular UG students of NIFT in their second year. 

The seat intake under this scheme will be displayed on the website prior to seat allocation.
