Group Discussion (GD) is one of the important rounds of hiring for fresher from colleges and it is so because in this interviewer can easily judge you and your communication skills. Are you capable of sharing your point of view without offending others?
So, today we will discuss how we should prepare for GD so we can make a good impression on the interviewer. First thing first, you should know about the GD and then you can start preparing for it.
GD can be of two types, as listed below:
Explore popular MBA colleges for you
- Factual topics: These are about practical things that a common person should know in their day-to-day life. Typically, these are generally social-economic topics. These can be currently happening in India or across the globe, i.e. they may have been in the news lately. A factual topic for discussion gives a candidate a chance to prove that they know of what is happening around them. For instance, tourism in India, education policy in India, GDP growth of India and many more.
- Abstract topics: Abstract topics can be single words, such as ‘Green’, or any other short sentence, such as ‘All trees can speak’. In this first, you have to think a lot about all the possibilities and note them down so you can come up with meaning full sentences to speak. In this interviewer judges your thinking capacity that how much innovative you can be during your job. In this, you can speak about both the pros and cons because it is just an image that can be shaped in any way. This type of topic can prove to be scoring for students who are not well aware of current affairs. For instance, smart work v/s hard work, null, blank and there are so many other topics like these.
Now we have to track the current affairs that can become our GD topics and make notes about them. You can also search on the internet to collect related information on them. Practice on a regular basis so you can be confident enough during actual GD.
In topic-based group discussions, the group members are given a topic to discuss and they give all participants nearly five minutes to think about the given topic and write their thoughts. Anyone can start GD by giving a small introduction to the topic. Don’t say too much at a time, rather keep delivery points in the proper time interval. In between to add more information in GD you can start like this. I agree with your point and want to add more points to it and go ahead. In case if you want to contradict someone then do it in such a manner that it won’t hurt them for that you can start like this, “I don’t want to offend anyone”, and then say your point.
Last, if you get the chance to give a conclusion then make sure you cover both pros and cons of that topic so that you can showcase a broad view. These are some basic tips if you practice them it will enhance your confidence, communication and leadership skills.

It might be difficult to get admission at XIME Kohchi with 88% in XAT. The institute accepts a 99.99% in XAT. However, these rules may change in the future; students are recommended to visit the Shiksha official page for the latest updates.
