Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed NEP 2020, particularly its push for the three-language policy, which conflicts with the state's long-standing two-language formula.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has strongly criticized Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accusing him of acting like a "king" and speaking "arrogantly" regarding the state's stance on the PM SHRI MoU and NEP 2020.

In a sharp response posted on social media, Stalin pointed to points 6 and 7 of Pradhan’s letter, which addressed Tamil Nadu’s refusal to fully implement NEP 2020 while seeking funds under the PM SHRI scheme. The Chief Minister reaffirmed that the Tamil Nadu government acts in accordance with the people’s will, rejecting any imposition from the Centre.

“Are you the one who wrote to me saying that the PM SHRI MoU sent by the Tamil Nadu government completely rejected the NEP and the three-language policy? We act only by respecting the thoughts of the people! Not by being bound by the words of Nagpur like you!” Stalin said, directly targeting the Union Minister.

The Education Minister’s letter, written in response to Tamil Nadu’s demand for Samagra Shiksha funds, stated that the Centre had already released ₹1,876.15 crore in FY 2023-24 and approved ₹4,305.66 crore for FY 2024-25. However, Pradhan expressed disappointment that Tamil Nadu had modified the MoU for PM SHRI schools by removing key clauses referring to the full implementation of NEP 2020.

Stalin, in his rebuttal, emphasized that Tamil Nadu is not willing to implement NEP 2020 and that the Centre must release funds without conditions. "Just answer whether or not it is possible to release the funds for Tamil Nadu students from the taxes collected from us!" he demanded.

Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed NEP 2020, particularly its push for the three-language policy, which conflicts with the state's long-standing two-language formula. The ruling DMK government has maintained that education policies should reflect regional aspirations rather than be dictated by the Centre.

The standoff over PM SHRI continues, with 32 States and Union Territories having signed the MoU, while Tamil Nadu remains firm in its refusal.
