The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) successfully conducted a 10-week intensive training program for the 46th batch of Management and Design Trainees (MT/DTs) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This program, aimed at fostering advanced engineering skills, was a milestone achievement, made possible through the collaborative efforts of IIT Kanpur’s faculty and staff, and the support of HAL Management Academy.
The program, organised by the Office of Outreach Activities and led by Prof. Bishakh Bhattacharya of IIT Kanpur, trained 59 participants across 5 core and 2 elective subjects. Delivered by 12 faculty members from the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering departments at IIT Kanpur, the training also featured Prof. C. Venkatesan from IIT Jodhpur.
Design and Management Trainees
The program aimed to enhance the trainees' knowledge and technical expertise, covering both fundamental and advanced topics, including Aircraft Stability and Control, Finite Element Modeling and Analysis, Aerodynamic Surface Design, Hydraulic Systems, Smart Sensors and Actuators, Material Selection and Characterization, among others. Participants also engaged in hands-on laboratory experiments and technical projects, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities.
In addition to theoretical instruction, the program provided extensive hands-on experience through laboratory experiments in areas such as temperature control systems, magnetic levitation, vibration control with tuned mass dampers, sound analysis using FFT, 3D digital image correlation, fluid dynamics, UAV propeller testing, and vision-based navigation systems. Trainees also worked on innovative projects, including metamaterial-based damping systems for rotors, AI-powered drone detection, bandgap generation in multi-rotor systems, hyperloop transportation for goods, manta-ray UAVs with integrated super cam, 3D-printed morphable UAV winglets, and prototypes like box wings, drone shooters, monocopters, auto-rotating bodies, manta ray underwater vehicles, and dragonfly models.
A total of 12 technical project models developed by the trainees were showcased at the Outreach Auditorium, inaugurated by Prof. Amalendu Chandra, Dean of Faculty Affairs, IIT Kanpur, and Shri Girish Bhaviyavar, DGM & Senior Faculty, HAL Management Academy. The program concluded with a valedictory ceremony attended by the Deans of Faculty Affairs and R&D, the Heads of the Mechanical Engineering and Design departments at IIT Kanpur, as well as two emeritus professors and key dignitaries from HAL Management Academy.
