NEET UG 2023 aspirant commits suicide in Puducherry

While lakhs of students are today sitting at various exam centres to attempt one of the most crucial and competitive entrance exams of India for admission to undergraduate medical courses, reportedly a 18-year-old NEET aspirant in Puducherry has committed suicide by hanging himself.
Hemachandran from Anna Nagar, Puducherry, reportedly committed suicide today by hanging himself. He was 18 years old and was set to write the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) exam 2023 today, which is being held at various exam centres in India and abroad for admission to undergraduate medical courses including MBBS, BDS, BVSc, BSc nursing and Ayush courses.
As per the Daily Thanthi report, the deceased student scored low marks in NEET last year. Police rushed to the spot and recovered the student's body and sent it to a government hospital for post-mortem. Urulaiyanpet police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
Recently, the All India JEE NEET Students Association (AIJNSA) submitted a letter to National Human Rights Commission India (NHRC) highlighting the growing concerns about the mental stress faced by NEET-UG aspirants in India.
"It is essential to ensure that students are not pushed to the brink of suicide due to academic pressure. The concerned authorities must work together to implement measures to reduce the mental pressure on students," stated AIJNSA's letter.
The students association is also demanding a minimum of two attempts of the NEET UG exam starting this year.
In the recent past, many such news of NEET aspirants committing suicide have come from other parts of the country as well. Tamil Nadu government is also demanding since long a total exemption from NEET exam and opines that it only favours affluent candidates.
