As the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) steps up its campaign to reinstate the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination (JNUEE), a poll conducted by Shiksha.com shows that a majority of respondents favour the move. The poll results come just days after a student referendum overwhelmingly supported the demand for JNU’s independent entrance exam, challenging the current CUET PG-based admission system.

The Shiksha.com poll highlights a deeply divided opinion on the ongoing debate over postgraduate admissions at JNU. While 47% support the reinstatement of JNUEE, 40% back CUET PG, which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to ensure uniformity across central and other participating universities. Thirteen percent of respondents remained undecided.
This online poll comes in the wake of a campus-wide referendum held by JNUSU on May 24. Out of 1,424 students who participated in the union’s internal vote, 1,323 (approximately 93%) favoured the return of the JNUEE for PhD admissions, expressing strong disapproval of the UGC-NET route currently in use.
On May 27, a JNUSU delegation visited the JNU administration to present the referendum outcome and demand a response. According to the union, no university official agreed to meet them despite waiting for nearly three hours. The student body termed this lack of engagement as “apathy” and accused the administration of siding with an “inept and corrupt” testing body instead of protecting the academic autonomy of the university.
JNUSU maintains that CUET PG and UGC-NET are not designed to evaluate research aptitude and overlook the unique admission needs of a research-intensive university like JNU. The union continues to demand a return to the university’s traditional entrance exam model for postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
