UCEED exam was held on January 18, 2020 from 10 am to 1 pm. The questions asked in UCEED 2020 was along expected line and the introduction of drawing section was a welcome change.
UCEED, the Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design, conducted by the Industrial Design Centre of IIT B has become extremely popular among the design aspirants, within a short span, as it is an opportunity which marries best of both the worlds, IIT & Design. Offering four year BDes programme at IIT Mumbai, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIITDM Jabalpur, UCEED saw a noticeable rise in its applicant this year. The fact that it could be a gateway to enter IITs without PCM in 10 + 2 is also a big draw among the students, though IIT Guwahati, among the four, takes its candidates from the ones having PCM in their 10 + 2.

UCEED 2020 Exam Pattern Change
This year saw UCEED change its pattern, first, the negative marking was taken away from one of the sections i.e. NAT (Numerical Answer Type) and second and the bigger change was the introduction of a paper base test of Drawing for 60 marks and 30 minutes thus making the computer based test of 240 marks & 2.5 hrs.

UCEED Exam Analysis 2020
UCEED 2020, followed the pattern as announced prior. The CBT comprised of three sections.
Section One, was the NAT, having 18 questions @ +4 / -0 for each question without negative marking. This section saw all kinds of calculation based questions, covering a range of mathematical topics from geometry to mensuration to probability with difficulty level fitting to the standards of the exam, requiring students to apply their brains along with the learnt concepts.
The section two was MSQ (Multiple Selection Questions) comprising of 18 questions @ +4/ -0.19 marking pattern. The section, by its nature of having multiple answers, is always considered toughest by the students. It comprised of lot number of logic based and observation based questions which required students to heavily concentrate. The fact that each question could have more than one answer certainly added to the challenge level.
Section Three comprised of 32 questions in Multiple Choice format @ +3/ -0.71, comprising of questions like counting surfaces, form extractions, form explorations, form viewership, craft identification, completing the series, visual puzzles, special recognition, spot the differences, colour theory, visual analysis and the likes. Two and a half hours of continuous screen time with focused undivided attention with the clock ticking on the head, topped with such limited intake makes UCEED one of the most vied for Design entrance which is seeing growing competition every year.
Right after the 2.5 hours of CBT, the students immediately had to switch to the PBT mode for their drawing exam. This was the first ever drawing question for the UEED exam. It was for 30 minutes and 60 marks. There was a situation narrated in a paragraph.

UCEED 2020 Drawing Question
The gist of the same was, Mr Sharma is speaking to his wife Professor Sharma complaining that she has forgotten her diet lunch prepared by him for her with so much care and now he is worried that she must be gorging on teas, samosas and aloo parathas from her college canteen as she would be busy with her corrections. Mrs Sharma in her reaction calls for her fifth tea and some junk snacks. The students had to the show how her table would look like piled up with corrections, teas and other stuff as per the imagination from the description without making the human figures. It clearly aimed to observe the student’s ability to imagine in great details following a text, ability to draw in 3D and perspective, proportions, observation, quality of lines and rendering in black and white only, material rendering as in wood for table, paper/ glass/ ceramic for tea cups/ mugs & snack plates, paper renderings for note books, other details like pens, pencils, spectacles, her phone, paper weight, tissue/ hanky, may be her hair clutcher/ tie etc.
Introduction of this section may see interesting twist in the merit this year which everyone is looking forward to!
UCEED results are expected around March 13. Following the scores, the merit will be drawn and the calls sent out. This year onwards some more colleges have been brought under the umbrella of UCEED who will be considering UCEED scores to offer admissions to the B Design courses on their campuses, though these colleges will not be a part of centralised IIT admission procedure. It is however upon the discretion of the candidates to accept the offer not a binding from UCEED conducting body.
Wishing all the Luck!

The closing rank for IIT Hyderabad was 43. So, if you secure a merit rank of 100 in the UCEED 2026 exam, you chances of admission to the B. Des will be very low. To have a good chance of admission into the institute, you must target a UCEED merit rank within the top 40. However, note that if you bel
