Team Shiksha reaches the IIMT center to catch the glimpse of students, who appeared for the first slot exam. Here’s what they said:
Manish Mishra, who appeared for Mechanical Engineering (ME) paper, said “The difficulty level of the exam was same as last year with not much change in the exam pattern. I expected Mathematics section to be more difficult, but it was easy this time.”
Another student Akshay, who is doing his B.Tech from Delhi College of Engineering, found the paper to be easy. “I competed my paper on time and it was easy as compared to previous exams. There were a total number of 65 questions for 100 marks. I could attend all the questions as the time given was sufficient,” said Akshay, who too appeared for ME.
This year GATE encompasses 23 different papers, in which each student had selected one paper, which they wish to attempt. GATE 2016 was a 3 hour long paper, which had a total number of 65 questions carrying 100 marks. The questions were divided into two types, that is, multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer questions.
A lot of students expected Mathematics section to be more difficult, but it was other technical questions that proved to be challenging and tricky. “Mathematics questions were so easy that I was able to answer many of them without using virtual calculator. On contrary, other technical questions were challenging. Aptitude section had only 10 questions and were easy to answer,” said Manish Kumar, who did his graduation from VIT University and currently works in Maruti Suzuki, Delhi.
Anjeet, a B.Tech graduate who came all the way from Haryana said that he had been preparing for the exam from last one year. He added, "I am happy my paper went really well. It wasn't that difficult and I could complete it on time. The exam pattern was similar to last year. There were 65 questions in the exam, out of which 55 questions were from Mathematics and other technical subjects and 10 questions from Aptitude and English."
While most of the students found the paper to be easy and the difficulty level to be same as last year, a few of them could not do well in the exam. ”The exam pattern was similar to last year, however, I could not do well in the exam. The Mathematics section was not as I expected it to be. It had more of theoretical questions than the calculative ones,” said Neet, who attempted the exam for the first time.
Since GATE 2016 is a computer based exam, a lot of students faced difficulty in operating the computers, especially, the virtual calculator, which was pretty complex to handle. “This was my first attempt to any computer based exam and I found the virtual calculator to be complex. I am more comfortable giving the paper based exam. However, GATE paper was easy and I did well in both the sections,” added Sunny from Sharda University, who opted for Electrical engineering. No other major glitches were reported from the center.
GATE 2016 Second Slot Student Analysis:
As soon as the GATE 2016 second slot exam got over, Shiksha got hold of some more students to know the overall reactions from the exam center.
Pankaj Kumar, who appeared for Mechanical Engineering, said, "The paper was quite easy from what I had expected. My mathematics has always been strong, and so, I could do equally well in both Mathematics and Technical sections. My only conserned is the MCQ section because it had negative marking."
Another student Nitish Dwivedi, who is pursuing B.Tech from Jamia Millia Islamia University, said that he was quite excited to see the exam paper as it was very much similar to the previous papers, from which he had prepared. "I started preparing for the exam four months back from previous papers. Thankfully, there was not much changes in the exam pattern. My paper went well. I have big hopes with this paper," added Nitish.
Abhinav Upadhaya, who also applied for ME, said, "I was preparing for this exam from last one and a half year. This was my second attempt for GATE exam. This time paper was good and it was quite easy. I was quick enough to solve all the questions from the Numerical sections."
GATE 2016 results are expected to be declared on March 19, 2016, on the official website.
