JEE Main 2017 Student Reactions: Paper 1
Shiksha spoke to a bunch of students who appeared for JEE Main 2017 on April 2. Most of the students shared that though the pattern of the exam remained the same, the exam was lengthy with the Maths section being the toughest.
According to Aman Rai from Father Agnel School, Noida, the question paper was pretty lengthy. He said, “I could solve questions from Physics and Chemistry but the Maths section was pretty tough and lengthy. I couldn’t solve a lot of questions from Maths. I ran out of time. Chemistry, like every year, was the easiest. Physics was of moderate level. I attempted almost all questions in both these subjects. Out of the 90 questions in the exam, I could solve around 40 to 50 of them. Since, there was negative marking also, I didn’t want to attempt questions I wasn’t sure about”.
Talking about pattern of the exam, he shared, “Each section had 30 questions. The ratio was 60:40. 60% of the questions were from Class 12th NCERT syllabus while 40% of the questions were from Class 11th”.
Reiterating the same views, another student, Chandra Dev who appeared for the exam from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dwarka, said, “This year, I found the exam tougher that what I expected it to be. I have solved question papers of last few years, those were not this tough and lengthy especially Maths and Physics. Infact, Physics too was not very easy as everyone is assuming it to be. I would keep Physics at par with Maths if difficulty level is concerned. The only difference is that I could solve more questions in Physics. I could solve around 30 to 40 questions overall. Due to negative marking, I didn’t attempt a lot of questions”.
“In Physics, the questions were uniformly distributed. Last year, more weightage was given to Modern Physics, this time that was not the case. There were very few questions from Heat and Thermo-dynamics. Chemistry has similar questions like last year. But, there were more questions from Organic chemistry. As far as Maths is concered, there were less questions from Trigonometry. Algebra was combined with Calculus. So, these two along with Co-ordinates formed the major part of the Maths section”, he added.
Hoping for lower cut-offs this year, Chandra Dev said, “I just hope I get through JEE Main this year. I have no clue how much will I get. I am praying for lower cut offs this year. All the other aspirants I met after the exam weren’t happy at all with their paper. No one looked happy”.
With the Maths section being lengthy, some students spent a lot of time solving the same. For Siddharth Dwivedi from Khaitan Public School, the aim was to solve more than 80% questions in Maths. Spending good amount of days and time on the subject, he believes that the subject is his strength. According to Siddharth, he spent a lot of time solving questions from Maths and managed solving around 20-22 questions despite the section being pretty lengthy. However, due to this, he couldn’t focus on the other two subjects – Chemistry and Physics.
The case was a bit different for Abhimanyu, another engineering aspirant, who thought the exam was a mixed of both easy as well as difficult questions. He said, “The pattern and difficulty level was the same as last year. The paper was pretty decent”.
