JoSAA Participating Institutes: With the declaration of the JEE Advanced result for 2026 the JoSAA seat allocation will start. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is a centralized gateway for managing undergraduate (UG) admissions to India’s most prestigious technical institutions.

JoSAA seat allocation is administered by Ministry of Education, and it allocates seats across 127 premier institutes, including 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), IIEST Shibpur, and 47 Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs).

For engineering aspirants, understanding the structure, seat matrix, and admission criteria of these participating institutes is important during choice filling. In this article on JoSAA Participating Institutes, we will share the list of participating institutes along with the number of institutions, top colleges etc.

JoSAA Participating Institutes: Classification of the Institutes

The JoSAA official website classifies participating institutions into four distinct categories:

JoSAA Participating Colleges

  • 23 IITs (JEE Advanced)

  • 31 NITs (+ IIEST Shibpur)

  • 26 IIITs (JEE Main)

  • 47 GFTIs (JEE Main)

List of JoSAA Participating Institutes in India

1. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

IITs are institutes of the top most engineering colleges not just in India but also some of the best colleges in the world. IITs are of national importance as they provide highly advanced infrastructure, elite research output, and globally recognized placements. Some of the top-tier old IITs include IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur. There are a total of 23 Institutes and merely qualifying JEE Main is not enough; to get admission in it. The admission requires a valid rank in JEE Advanced

2. National Institutes of Technology (NITs) & IIEST

There are a total of 31 NITs + Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur. The admission is based on All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Main Paper 1. NITs follow a dual quota system - 50% of seats are reserved for students from "Home State" where NIT is located, and remaining are allocated to "Other State" quota. Top colleges are NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, and MNIT Jaipur.

3. Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)

There are a total of 26 IIIT institutions and the admission is granted through JEE Main ranks. These institutes focus specialized curricula heavily on Information Technology, Computer Science, and Electronics. They operate under either the Central Government model or Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Some of the prominent names include IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Gwalior, and IIIT Sri City.

4. Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)

There are a total of 47 GFTIs in India. The seats in these colleges are allocated based on the candidate's performance in the JEE Main exam. These universities are funded completely or partially by Central or State Governments and provide accessible, subsidized technical education across various states. Some of the famous names include BIT Mesra, Assam University (Silchar), and JNU Delhi.

Crucial Factors to Check for JoSAA Participating Institutes:

Prior to locking your preference below are some of the factors which candidates must consider:

  • Review official JoSAA Cutoff Archives from prior years to know closing rank trends for specific branches.

  • Institutional fees vary widely. Centrally funded institutes offer tuition waivers to candidates belonging to SC, ST, and economically weaker sections, whereas certain PPP-model IIITs may have higher fees. Candidates must check this before proceeding to to take admission.

  • Keep in mind that NITs reserve 50% of seats for Home State candidates, which lowers cutoff ranks for local state residents. IITs and IIITs follow All India (AI) allocation strategy with no home state preferences.

  • Research whether a established IIT/IIIT is running from permanent campus or a temporary transit site, as it affects lab access and recruitment drives.

If candidates fail to secure a seat during main JoSAA rounds or wish to upgrade a non-IIT seat, Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts independent "Special Rounds". These rounds fill remaining vacant seats across the NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs using your JEE Main rank.

With the JoSAA seat allocation starting soon, it is advised to candidates to take their next step carefully and cautiously. All the best!
