The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) counselling processes are two of the most important admission procedures for engineering aspirants seeking admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

Check here the major differences between the JoSAA counselling and CSAB counselling. Check if it is necesaary to apply for both counselling, who should participate in both of them, and more details below.

JoSAA vs CSAB 2026: Key Differences Explained

JoSAA vs CSAB: The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) counselling processes are two of the most important admission procedures for engineering aspirants seeking admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JEE Main and JEE Advanced. However, many students often remain confused about the difference between JoSAA and CSAB counselling.

While JoSAA is the primary counselling process for admissions into IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other participating institutes, CSAB conducts special rounds to fill vacant seats remaining after JoSAA counselling concludes. However, IITs do not participate in CSAB. Understanding the difference between JoSAA and CSAB is crucial for candidates to maximise their admission chances and avoid mistakes during choice filling.

What is JoSAA Counselling?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the centralised counselling process for admission to undergraduate engineering courses offered by IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across India.

Admission through JoSAA is based on:

  1. JEE Main ranks for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs
  2. JEE Advanced ranks for IIT admissions

The JoSAA counselling process generally includes multiple rounds of seat allotment. Candidates must complete registration, choice filling, choice locking, seat acceptance fee payment, and document verification within the specified deadlines. JoSAA is considered the main counselling process for engineering admissions in India.

What is CSAB Counselling?

The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts special counselling rounds after the completion of JoSAA counselling. The purpose of CSAB Special Rounds is to fill vacant seats left in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JoSAA rounds end. Unlike JoSAA, CSAB does not conduct admissions for IITs.

Who can participate in CSAB counselling 2026:

Students who:

  • Did not get a seat in JoSAA
  • Want better branch or college options
  • Missed JoSAA participation
  • Wish to upgrade their allotted seat

For more details check: CSAB Eligibility Criteria - Who Should Appear for Special Round and Its Benefits

CSAB special rounds often become beneficial for candidates with comparatively lower JEE Main ranks because many vacant seats become available after JoSAA withdrawals.

JoSAA vs CSAB: Which Counselling is Better?

Both JoSAA and CSAB play important roles in the engineering admission process.

JoSAA is the primary counselling process and offers the widest range of seats, including IIT admissions. On the other hand, CSAB provides an additional opportunity for students to secure better branches or colleges through vacant seats. Experts usually advise candidates with average and lower ranks to participate in both counselling processes to maximise their chances of admission.

JoSAA vs CSAB: Major Differences

Check out the table below to understand the major differences between JoSAA and CSAB counselling 2026:

Can Students Participate in Both JoSAA and CSAB?

Yes, candidates can participate in both JoSAA and CSAB counselling. However, candidates need to note that:

  1. CSAB registration is separate from JoSAA registration
  2. Students allotted seats through JoSAA can also apply for CSAB special rounds
  3. Candidates may choose to surrender or upgrade their previously allotted seat as per CSAB rules
  4. Participating in both counselling processes increases admission opportunities, especially for students aiming for better branches or institutes.

Why Are CSAB Cutoffs Usually Lower?

One of the major reasons students prefer CSAB counselling is that the closing ranks in CSAB special rounds are often lower than JoSAA closing ranks. This happens because:

  • Many students withdraw after JoSAA
  • Some students shift to private universities
  • Vacant seats remain in certain branches and institutes
  • Less competition exists during special rounds

As a result, candidates with lower JEE Main ranks sometimes secure admission to NITs or IIITs through CSAB despite not getting seats during JoSAA counselling.

Who Should Participate in CSAB Counselling?

CSAB counselling can be beneficial for:

  1. Candidates who did not get any seat in JoSAA
  2. Students looking for branch upgrades
  3. Candidates with moderate or lower JEE Main ranks
  4. Candidates who missed JoSAA registration deadlines

Tip:

  1. If you haven't received a seat during the JoSAA counselling but believe you might be able to get one through the CSAB process, you must participate in the CSAB counselling. Additionally, if you did secure a seat through JoSAA but wish to improve or upgrade to a better option, you should also consider applying for the CSAB counselling.
  2. Students should carefully analyse previous years’ CSAB cutoffs before participating in the special rounds.

Common Mistakes Students Make During JoSAA and CSAB Counselling

Many candidates lose good admission opportunities due to errors during counselling. Some common mistakes include:

  • Filling only top colleges without backup options
  • Incorrect order of choices. Candidates are advised to prepare a balanced choice list with dream, realistic, and safe options.
  • Ignoring home state quota benefits
  • Not understanding Freeze, Float, and Slide options
  • Missing deadlines for fee payment or document upload
  • Skipping CSAB counselling assuming no seats will remain
  • Not checking previous years’ cutoff trends properly.

The most important thing to understand is that JoSAA counselling does not apply to private engineering colleges at all — it strictly manages admissions for premier government-funded institutions only. No, students do not have to apply separately at IIT Roorkee website after JoSAA counselling. This is because the institute follows a common admission process for its BTech course just like the other IITs. Shortlisted students who get a seat through the JoSAA counselling, simply need to report for do

No, JoSAA counselling is not required for the students who want to take admission on the basis of entrance in BTech at Army Institute of Technology, Pune. Only entrance scores are considered at the time of admission. Students need to submit JEE Mains scorecard at the time of admission.

Yes, students may get a seat in NIT Puducherry BTech with 92 percentile in JEE Main through JoSAA counselling. The cutoff is high for specialisations, such as CSE. With NITPY being one of the top institutes and part of the NIT Tag, the cutoff is always high. But 92 percentile can be enough for later

Think of JoSAA as a matching service. After your JEE Advanced results, you'll log into the JoSAA portal and rank your preferred branches at IIT Dharwad. The system then looks at your All India Rank (AIR) and your choices to offer you the best possible seat. Once a seat is offered, you'll pay the fee

JoSAA is the counselling process needed to get admission in the BTech course at IIIT Vadodara. The candidate needs to appear for JEE Mains. If the student meets the cut off requirement, then the student must participate in counselling.
