What is NIRF Ranking
NIRF full form stands for National Institutional Ranking Framework. It is a method introduced by the Ministry of Education to rank educational institutions in India. The NIRF rank is released annually to rate colleges and universities in India based on five parameters:

Perception (PR)
Overall, as per the NIRF Ranking Criteria, colleges are ranked under 17 categories, which include overall, engineering, universities, MBA, medical, etc. However, the engineering, university, management, and overall categories are the ones GFTIs usually appear in for National Institutional Ranking Framework.

GFTIs NIRF Ranking 2026 List Release Date
As of now, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has not announced the NIRF ranking 2026 release date. However, based on past year’s trends, the ranks usually come between July-September. NIRF 2025 was released in September 4, 2025 at Bharat Mandam, Delhi. So, students who are eagerly waiting for top GFTIs as per NIRF 2026 ranking, can expect somewhere in this timeline. This year, Union Education Minister, Pralhad Joshi will announce 11th edition NIRF rank list at nirfindia.org.

How many GFTIs are there in India
As per 2025-26 data, there are a total of 56 Government Funded Technical Institutions in India. These institutions offer BTech, BArch and postgraduate courses. JoSAA conducts the admission process for GFTI colleges in India. Admissions are done based on JEE Main ranks, with an approx seat intake of 6000+ for BTech and BArch admissions.

No, there is no need to apply separately at VNIT Nagpur after JoSAA counselling. BTech and BArch admissions at all NITs, including VNIT, are centrally managed through JoSAA and CSAB (for vacant seats).
