Things to Know Before Joining VIT University

Starting your BTech degree at Vellore Institute of Technology is an achievement. However, the campus is hige and energy is high. To give a real picture of what it feels like studying at VIT, we looked through many forums and communities, and here's what they have mentioned- 

VIT Campus is Huge and Crowded

The first thing one will notice after joining VIT is the crowd. The main campus, VIT Vellore is home to 35000 - 45000 (approx) students.

• The crowd is diverse, and you will meet people from all over India. 

• Multiple clubs for music, coding, sports, etc. 

• The space is a bit competitive. Whether sitting for lunch, joining a club, or sitting for placements, the competition is real.

VIT University uses a system called FFCS (Fully Flexible Credit System), which means that you can choose your own subjects and pick class timings and professors. This is usually allowed during second semester. To do so, students have to login to VIT Freshers Portal of respective campuses on the registration day. 

• It can be tiring and confusing at first. Also, the slots gets filled up first. 

• So, the best thing you can do is to keep a few backup plans of your schedule.

• Talk to mentors or seniors asking for their advice regarding professors, which subject to begin with in the first semester.

75% Attendance Record is Mandatory

Students have to maintain at least 75% of attendance in every single subject. Even if your attendance drops to 74%, portal will automatically block you from writing final exams. 

• However, if your CGPA is 9.0 or higher, then VIT offers relaxation in the attendance.

• It means that you can skip classes without getting penalised

Students who have received scholarships, must ensure that they have 75% attendance throughout their academic career, inorder to get VITEEE scholarships.

During the academic year, students are evaluated through three main things: CAT 1 and CAT 2 (Continuous Assessment Tests), Digital Quizzes and Assignments, and FAT (Final Assessment Test). 

• CAT 1 and 2 are like mid-term exams that is conducted early in semester.

• Digital quizzes and assessments are regular online tests or tasks uploaded at VIT Freshers Portal

• FAT is the final exam that is conducted at the end of the semester.

VIT Campus Guide: Hostel Mess Rules and Guidelines

After booking hostel at VIT campus, students will have to select a food plan according to preferences. The VIT Mess Guide can be confusing at first. However, students will have to select from three main options -

• Regular mess (include veg and non-veg): Serves traditional North and South-Indian food. 

• Special mess: Include extra daily items like fresh fruits, eggs, bread, etc. 

• Catering mess: It’s a little expensive, as it is maintained by private companies. The food quality is good with variety.

VIT follows a strict guideline and prioritises discipline and safety. Hostels have biometrics, where you have scan your fingerprint to enter your hostel at night. 

• In case you are planning to go home, then you need to apply for an online leave request, which will be approved by local guardian or warden. 

• The deadline to reach your hostel block is by 8:30 or 9:00 pm (approx). For girls, the hostel curfew is 7:30 to 8:00 pm.

Two Fests in a Year

VIT Group of Institutions conduct two massive fests in a year: 

• A Cultural Fest - Rivera
• A Science Fest - Gravitas

Along with that, respective campuses also hold other fests, such as techno-cultural festivals, cultural, and sports festivals, etc. Departmental fests are also held, which are hosted by individual departments. 

VIT Hosts Several Clubs and Chapters to Help You Stay Motivated

VIT University hosts several clubs and chapters throughout the year -

• Clubs are basically competitive events, and they do recruit students in the second semester
• While chapters are some events and workshops that take place in the university.

VIT Placement System: How they really work

VIT University is always known for its placement records and excellent academic history. Top recruiters like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon visit campus every year. Because there are so many students, the VIT divides the placement/job offers into three categories -

To sit for the exams for highest-paying companies, students need to have a high CGPA throughout their career. If your grades are low, then you might not get a chance to interview for top companies. The Career Development Center conducts placements in slots. Super dream companies recruit first (starting in July), followed by Dream and Regular Jobs. 

Research Culture in VIT University

The research culture at VIT campuses is unpredictable. It completely depends on which department/stream are you applying for. In addition, it also depends on the professor and the specialisation. We advise you to talk to seniors to get an idea of the research programmes. 

VIT Through VITEEE: Miscellaneous Things Before You Start Your Career

• VIT has strict rules. Students must do their biometric attendance once they reach their hostel block. If biometric attendance is not done, then they might call your guardian or parents.
• Everything, starting from asignment submissions, class attendance, checking grades, hostel leave, etc. is done through VTOP portal. 
• Not all hostel rooms have AC facilities, and students have to change hostel rooms every year. VIT provides student rank based on your academic perfomance. Depending on your rank, you will have to take part in the counselling, where you have to choose your hostel. So, get an AC room, you need to study well and score good CGPA. 
• Students need to have at least 180 credits to graduate, out of 130 credits are covered with core subjects, and the rest category comes under the electives. You can select subjects based on your interests and take accordingly. 
• If you are applying for masters abroad, then you will not get permission to sit in campus placements. 

Overall, VIT offer great facilities, excellent job opportunities and a lifetime experience to remember. However, it also requires you stay discipline. If you can manage time and study well to keep your grades up, then VIT University can be a great place to start your career.
