How is GATE exam conducting body determined?

The responsibility of organizing the GATE exam is not assigned randomly; it follows a pre-established eight-year rotation cycle among eight major zones. Here is the process behind selecting the exam body for GATE -

  • Each of the participating institutes takes a turn as primary organizing each year.
  • The exam body is determined by a rotational cycle; this process ensures a balanced distribution of administrative responsibility and prevents a single institute from dominating the exam's tone or structure.

Below is the table which consists of the year-wise GATE exam body in the past years, this gives an idea to students on which IIT will conduct the exam in the upcoming session.

By referring to the above table, candidates can get an idea on which IIT will conduct the GATE exam in the next session. So, if any student has this query that “which IIT will conduct the GATE in 2028” they must know that it will be IIT Delhi.

Knowing the GATE exam body in advance helps candidates to understand the historical question trends, as the organizing institute's faculty typically leads the committee that filters and selects final questions from a pool provided by professors across all IITs.

The first GATE exam was conducted in 1984 by IISc Bangalore. With time and the inclusions of institutes added to rotation policy new colleges got the opportunity to conduct the coveted entrance exam. IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati first joined the organizing group in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
