IIT MBA admission

MBA from IITs - MBA courses offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) are very popular among management aspirants. Many aspirants opt for MBA from IITs over newer IIMs or other top MBA colleges as the IITs hold top positions in MBA rankings and offer good placements and Return on Investment (ROI). Low fees and lower CAT cut offs than IIMs are also major reasons for students choosing IITs for an MBA course over a popular but private B-School. Infact, many IITians who appear for CAT prefer to go back to their home college over joining an IIM despite high CAT percentile.

Why MBA from IITs?

MBA aspirants may ask, “why pursue an MBA degree from an engineering institute?” There are many reasons why one should considered pursuing MBA from IITs; some of them are listed below:

  • CAT percentile required for admission to IITs is much lower than that required for IIMs and other top MBA colleges in India. For example, IIT Delhi MBA cut off is 98 percentile while IIT Bombay MBA cut off is 97 percentile, much below than that of IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore and others.
  • All the seven IITs offering MBA are ranked among to 50 MBA institutes in India (2025) by NIRF-MHRD - IIT Delhi (Rank 4), IIT Kharagpur (Rank 12), IIT Madras (Rank 13), IIT Bombay (Rank 14), IIT Roorkee (Rank 22), IIT Kanpur (Rank 27) and IIT-ISM Dhanbad (Rank 46). IIT Jodhpur has made an entry in the top 100 this year, at Rank 98.
  • The IITs offer niche and upcoming MBA specialisations such as Business Analytics (IIT-IMS Dhanbad) and MBA Telecom (IIT Delhi).
  • Average fees of MBA courses at IITs is under INR 10 lakh. The fee is to be paid in instalments, semester-wise. There are provisions of scholarships and education loans too.
  • Average salary offered to students graduating from these institutes is INR 13 lakh per annum. Since, there isn't much gap between the fees and average salary offered in campus placements, the return of investment or the ROI of the MBA degree is good.

Q:   I am in the final year of my Bachelor's degree. Am I eligible to take the CAT exam?
A:

Yes, you are eligible to appear for the exam provided your score in the first two years of the degree course is above 50% (or equivalent). In case you belong to SSC/ST/PwD categories, the minimum aggregate should be 45%. Candidates planning to pursue MBA must make sure that they score minimum of 50 per cent in aggregate in every year of their Bachelor's degree programme, so that overall average too is 50 per cent. Those, in the final year of graduation must take care that if they do not have a minimum of 50 per cent in first two years, they need to score much higher in the final year so that their overall score meets the minimum requirement. To have a better chance of being selected by the Iims, candidates must aim for high scores in graduation and not just 50 per cent as academic record is a significant contributor in shortlisting of candidates for admission.
