IIT MBA admission

MBA from IITs - MBA courses offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) are very popular among management aspirants. Many aspirants opt for MBA from IITs over newer IIMs or other top MBA colleges as the IITs hold top positions in MBA rankings and offer good placements and Return on Investment (ROI). Low fees and lower CAT cut offs than IIMs are also major reasons for students choosing IITs for an MBA course over a popular but private B-School. Infact, many IITians who appear for CAT prefer to go back to their home college over joining an IIM despite high CAT percentile.

For admission to 2026 MBA batch, the application process at IITs started from December 25 onwards with the release of IIT Delhi MBA applications. IIT Bombay started applications from January 1 and rest of the IITs started registrations subsequently. Currently, application window of all seven campuses is open (check last date to apply furhter below in this article). Candidates can fill the application form with their CAT 2025 score.

Out of 23 IITs, seven institutes offer various MBA programmes through their respective Departments of Management Studies. All these seven IITs are ranked as top MBA institutes in India. While, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay are ranked among top 10 in the NIRF-MHRD ranking of best MBA institutes in India, other four IITs are ranked among top 50 MBA institutes in India.

IITs select MBA candidates who have appeared for CAT exam. IIT MBA CAT cut offs range between 80 to 98 percentile. For IIT Delhi, Mumbai and Madras, the desirable score is 98 percentile.

While the MBA admission process for these IITs is common, courses, fee and placements are different. In this article, you will read all about MBA from IITs, including dates, selection process, eligibility, fees, ranking and latest placement data.

Q:   How can I take admission in MBA at SJMSOM without CAT?
A:

Candidate seeking admission to the MBA programme at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay must take the CAT exam as SJMSOM inducts candidates for the MBA programme based on a valid score in CAT. Candidates having valid minimum CAT overall and section wise percentile as mentioned in the cut-off list released by the SJMSOM, IIT Bombay will be shortlisted for Personal Interview (PI) round. The final merit list for candidates selected for the MBA programme at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay will be based on candidate’s composite score of different parameters whose weightage are given below:

Particular

Weightage

CAT Overall Score

Gender Diversity

10%

Academic Profile

10%

Work Experience

5%

Post Graduate/ Professionals

Q:   Is CAT score the most important criteria for MBA admission at DoMS IIT Madras?
A:

For MBA admission, candidates who have applied are further shortlisted based on the composite score (calculated using CAT score, past academic performance, experience, gender and diversity) for a Virtual Interview. The weightage aligned to each and every component of MBA admission selection is as follows:

Selection ParameterWeightage
CAT score75%
Gender 3%
Diversity3%
UG/ Class 10/ Class 12 scores14%
Work experience5%
Total100%

The final selection is based on the following:

  • Virtual Interview
  • Composite score of selection parameters
  • Other achievements (if any)

For other courses, however, students are either selected on the basis of their academic background, personal interview, SOP of institute conducted entrance exam.

Q:   What is the validity of CAT score?
A:

CAT score is valid for one year at the IIMs and top B-Schools. In some tier 3 and government institutions, CAT score of previous two years are also acceptable. Many B-schools including IIMs have an option of deferment of admission, wherein you can confirm your admission and pay the nominal fee but join the batch in the next year. It is advised that candidates take admission in the same year as their CAT attempt so that they don't have to reappear next year. Given the competition in MBA space, it is difficult to get a good college whether you have a low score or average score. So, incase one is getting a good college, they should take admission and not drop a year to appear for CAT again.

Why MBA from IITs?

MBA aspirants may ask, “why pursue an MBA degree from an engineering institute?” There are many reasons why one should considered pursuing MBA from IITs; some of them are listed below:

  • CAT percentile required for admission to IITs is much lower than that required for IIMs and other top MBA colleges in India. For example, IIT Delhi MBA cut off is 98 percentile while IIT Bombay MBA cut off is 97 percentile, much below than that of IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore and others.
  • All the seven IITs offering MBA are ranked among to 50 MBA institutes in India (2025) by NIRF-MHRD - IIT Delhi (Rank 4), IIT Kharagpur (Rank 12), IIT Madras (Rank 13), IIT Bombay (Rank 14), IIT Roorkee (Rank 22), IIT Kanpur (Rank 27) and IIT-ISM Dhanbad (Rank 46). IIT Jodhpur has made an entry in the top 100 this year, at Rank 98.
  • The IITs offer niche and upcoming MBA specialisations such as Business Analytics (IIT-IMS Dhanbad) and MBA Telecom (IIT Delhi).
  • Average fees of MBA courses at IITs is under INR 10 lakh. The fee is to be paid in instalments, semester-wise. There are provisions of scholarships and education loans too.
  • Average salary offered to students graduating from these institutes is INR 13 lakh per annum. Since, there isn't much gap between the fees and average salary offered in campus placements, the return of investment or the ROI of the MBA degree is good.

Q:   What if I have a very good CAT score but poor academic record?

A:

CAT fee is non-refundable. Candidates must note that under no circumstances will the CAT fee be refunded to any candidate. The fee amount of INR 2600 (INR 1300 for Reserved category students) once paid cannot be claimed for refund.

No, there is no mention of CAT scores being accepted to decide MET Institute of Management MMS admissions. The institute only mentions accepting the scores of the MAH-CET to admit candidates for the MMS course.

Thus, candidates with a valid CAT score must appear for MAH-CET to be eligible to apply.

Major topics under XAT and CAT syllabus are similar. Common sections include Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation, and Verbal Ability. While the sections are same the syllabus is not identical. XAT also includes unique sections, namely Decision Making and General Knowledge.
