IIT Delhi Hosts 150 High School Students for Sci-Tech Spins Lecture Series 2025
IIT Delhi hosted the Sci-Tech Spins lecture series for high school students, aimed at fostering curiosity and innovation. This initiative seeks to inspire young minds for science and technology.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi launched the 2025 edition of its "Sci-Tech Spins" lecture series for high school students with an engaging session titled βEarth's Oceans: The Physics Behind Their Might,β delivered by Prof. Ritabrata Thakur from the Department of Applied Mechanics. As part of IIT Delhi's commitment to bridging the gap between academia and society. This initiative aims to foster curiosity and innovation among young minds. The inaugural session saw participation from around 150 students from government-aided and private schools, with two-thirds of the attendees being girls. The interactive and inspiring lecture captivated an enthusiastic audience of students from classes 9 and 11.
Prof. Thakur highlighted the vital role of oceans in regulating global weather and climate, explaining techniques like in-situ moorings, research cruises, and remote sensing used in oceanographic studies. He discussed fluid dynamics equations governing atmospheric and oceanic flows, emphasizing turbulence as a key unsolved problem in classical physics. Students learned how turbulent mixing impacts temperature, salinity, and nutrients, sustaining marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
While sharing his experience, Prof. Ritabrata Thakur said, "It was incredible engaging with high school students from various schools. The questions were probing and showed a high level of academic preparedness. It is always heartening to discuss science with excited and curious young minds."
Prof. Rahul Mishra, faculty coordinator, Sci-Tech Spins Lecture Series, said, "Our aim with this lecture series is to make the school students excited about research. Also to make them understand how what they are learning in school is applied in the real world. This year we aim to have lectures not only in the field of science and technology but also in other diverse fields like design, humanities, management, and policy making."
The lecture series is part of IIT Delhi's ongoing efforts to inspire school students, particularly girls, to pursue higher education in STEM fields. Both students and coordinators expressed enthusiasm for more frequent sessions in the future, allowing a larger number of students to experience IIT Delhi firsthand.
