IIT JAM 2027: Notification (Soon), Dates (OUT), Eligibility, Registration (Sep 5), & Syllabus

JAM has been established as a benchmark for undergraduate-level science education in the country for the last two decades. The objective of JAM is to provide admissions to postgraduate degree programmes and to consolidate Science as a career option for students across the country. The authority conducts the IIT JAM exam for 100 marks. The question paper comprises 60 questions. Students need to obtain 75+ marks to qualify for the entrance test.

JOAPS stands for JAM Online Application Portal System. The portal is used for registration, downloading admit card, checking result and applying for admission. All communication regrding JAM is intimated through JOAPS Portal.  The login credentials for JOAPS portal are generated during the JAM registration process.

IIT JAM exam syllabus 2027 is available online. Students can know the important topics for exam preparation through the JAM 2027 syllabus. Each test paper has a different syllabus. Students must plan their preparation strategy as per the syllabus.

Successfully registered candidates of the IIT JAM application get an opportunity to modify the details that were earlier filled incorrectly in the JAM application form.

In IIT JAM exam pattern, there is no deduction of marks for unanswered questions. Such questions are not taken into consideration while, calculating the total marks.

JAM Exam will be conducted for SEVEN subjects, also referred to as Test Papers: Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH). The medium for all the Test Papers is English only.

JAM 2027 examination pattern is divided in such a way that the exam was conducted in the form of three sections ie., Section A, B, and C.

Section - B contains a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) carrying two marks each. Each MSQ is similar to MCQ but with the difference that MSQ may have one or more than one correct choice (s) out of the four given choices. The candidate is awarded full credit only if all the correct answer (s) and no wrong answers are selected. Candidates can mark the answer (s) by clicking the choice (s). There is no negative marking or partial marking for MSQ.

Students can plan their preparation through the exam syllabus. Check the syllabus to know what the important topics are. Then gather the required resources like the best books, previous year question paper, and mock test. Students must solve the IIT JAM question paper after completing 70% of the syllabus to keep track of their preparation.

IIT JAM Admit Card is an online document that acts as the hall ticket to the centre and carries candidates' personal and exam paper details. Candidates will have to log in to the exam website and download the hall ticket in PDF format. 

The following are the login credentials required to download the IIT JAM admit card:

• username: Name/ Mobile Number/ Application Number
• Password: Date of Birth or password set while creating the account for registration.

In case of any discrepancy in the particulars of the candidate or his/her photograph and signature shown on the IIT JAM admit card, candidates should immediately approach the IIT JAM Help Line between 10.00 A.M. and 5.00 P.M. 

Hence, candidates need not worry about the possibility of not getting allowed inside the exam centre. However, they must follow up with the examination conducting body before the commencement of the admission process.  

Yes, but not in IITs, NITs, or IISc. Central Universities offer admission to the MSc degree through CUET PG. Students must appear for the state level or university level entrance exam for admission to the MSc degree.

The difficulty level of IIT JAM is moderate to tough. The difficulty level for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is tougher as compared to the IIT JAM subjects of Economics, Biotechnology and Geology.

If we compare the difficulty level of IIT JAM examination with CUET PG exam, ISI Admission test, NEST exam, IISER Entrance examination, then it will be found that IIT JAM examination is comparetively tougher than the other top colleges/ universities entrance examination.

Physics is one of the most sought course of choice among students who want to take admission in IITs, IISc, etc. It is for this reason alone that IIT JAM Physics paper is extremely competitive. Thus, when preparing for the Physics paper in JAM exam, candidates are suggested to pay less attention to the number of books from which they are studying and more emphasis on finding the topics that will help them score more.

To have an effective prep plan for IIT JAM Physics paper, students should have a timetable in place and make notes of important formulas that will make their last-minute preparation easy.

Every year on the rotational basis, IIT JAM exam organising institute changes. For the academic session 2025-2026 the exam conducting body is IIT Bombay. IIT JAM 2026 exam was conducted on February 15, 2026 at 116+ exam centres across the nation. Test takers were able to download the IIT JAM 2026 question paper.

IIT JAM passing mark varies category wise for each test paper. Students need to check the JAM scorecard to know the minimum passing marks for the test. The qualifying cutoff is mentioned below.

For each Test Paper All India merit list is prepared based on AIR. The number of candidates included in the All India Merit List is based on the total number of seats available in each category (GEN/ OBC-NCL/ EWS/ SC/ ST/ PwD) in a given subject. 

The authority has released the IIT JAM opening and closing ranks 2026 online at jam2026.iitb.ac.in. Candidates whose rank in IIT JAM is within the opening and closing ranks are eligible for admission to the participating institutes.
