Henri Fayol believed in constant communication between supervisors and employees. He defines the scalar chain as the chain of supervisors from the highest authority to the lowest rank. Employees should contact their supervisors about any scalar chain issues. Every command, message, request, instruction, or explanation has to go through the scalar chain. This path shows a company’s line of authority and the links through which communications are passed from the highest to the lowest rank in a company and vice versa.

Gang Plank in Scalar Chain

Fayol developed a ‘gang plank’ methodology to avoid possible communication delays. This flow is a straight-line arrangement between two points to ensure swift communication.

In the above image, X heads two teams where A and D are at the same level, B and E are at the same level, and C and F are at the same level.

The flow of communication is defined as A to B to C and D to E to F. The authority-responsibility relationship is also defined.

C and F cannot directly contact each other. It takes much time during an emergency to communicate per the defined flow. To solve this communication problem and better flow of information, a system known as ‘Gang Plank’ was introduced where C or F could contact each other, and in the same way, B and E could contact each other.
