GATE 2020 NPTEL releases last five year papers

GATE question papers: The online portal of Ministry of HRD, National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) has released the last five-year question papers for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) on its official portal, nptel.ac.in.

The initiative was launched by the Union Human Resource and Development Minister. While launching the initiative, the HRD Minister through a tweet, said that these papers could give a boost to GATE aspirants’ preparations.

In another initiative for students who will clear GATE, the HRD ministry had earlier announced to reduce the GATE score requirement to be eligible for Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF).  Now those who scored 650 or above in GATE will be eligible for the scholarship. Under PMRF candidates can seek admission in research programmes, PhDs at top Indian institutes including IITs, IISc Bangalore, IISER etc.

The GATE counselling process for the same is underway at Centralised Conselling for MTech / March / MPlan (CCMT). Those who clear these counselling processes will be considered for admission at NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes.

For CCMT counselling, the registration process was started on May 13 and will conclude on June 12 at ccmt.nic.in. The online choice locking will be held from June 5 to 12. There will be a total of three rounds of seat allotments will be held and additional two rounds will be held if the seat remains vacant.

While over 8.5 lakh students had registered for the exam, 6.85 lakh candidates had appeared for the same. The exam was held for 25 papers with Biomedical paper as the new introduction.

The highest GATE cutoff score for NIT M.Tech admission typically ranges from 800 to 850 in the first round. Some of the top NITs include NIT Surathkal, NIT Trichy, and NIT Warangal, accept admissions with GATE score 800 above for branches like EC, CS, ME, and EE.

Based on the past-year's records and experts analysis, it is expected that the average expected cutoff for GATE exam 2026 can fall somewhere between 28 to 37 for general category, 26 to 28.3 marks for OBC-NCL/EWS category, and 27 -31 for SC/ST category.

40 marks in GATE will approximately give a rank between 2000 to 5000 depending on the paper difficulty level and the number of registered candidates in that particular branch.  Obtaining 40 marks is mainly considered average, opening chances to a few new IITs (less popular branches) and NITs.

No, GATE questions are not exactly repeated. However, the concept, core, and question format may remain the same. Therefore, candidates must focus on concept-building and practice GATE PYQs as many times as possible. In addition, solve mock test paper to improve accuracy and time management.

Yes, GATE has negative marking for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) only. In GATE question paper, MCQs will be of one and two marks. Hence, the marking scheme for such questions can be checked below -

  • For one mark MCQ - 1/3rd mark will be deducted
  • For two mark MCQ - 2/3rd mark will be deducted

NHCE Bangalore accepts GATE score for admission to M.Tech programme. However, it is not compulsory. Aspirants can also get into M.Tech course based on their Karnataka PGCET scores. Selected candidates have to confirm their seat by paying the course fees.
