Appeared for IIT JAM and wondering what's next. Students have few options to choose from. They can either appear for other entrance exams like JEST and CUET PG or take a drop and reappear next year. We believe students must try all possible options to get admission to their preferred course. In this article, students will get alternative options for the IIT JAM and preparation tips.

What after IIT JAM 2026?

What after IIT JAM 2026

One of the big questions for students after completion of entrance is what next? This is not just a question, entire career future depends on this. After entrance exam, students have two options: either to secure admission to the institutions as per their rank, while the other option is to take a drop year and practice for the better opportunities. The same goes for IIT JAM students.

After IIT JAM entrance exam, students can apply for admission to IITs, NITs, IISc, CFTIS, DIAT, IIEST Shibpur, IISER Pune, IISER Bhopal, IIPE, JNCASR, etc., based on their rank. Those students who failed to score above the expected cutoff can choose to appear for other entrance tests like JEST and CUET PG. The better option shall be CUET PG because the difficulty level of the exam is less compared to JAM. If you choose to appear for Joint Entrance Screening Test, then you need to focus on building your conceptual knowledge. Also, this exam difficulty level is high compared to Joint Admission Test for Masters. So it is wise enough to decide before choosing an option after IIT JAM exam.

What after IIT JAM 2026: Next Options

Just after the IIT JAM exam, calculate your probable score and compare it with the previous year qualify cutoff. If you think there is less chance of admission, then the next option is to appear for other entrance test like CUET PG and JAM. But the catch is that CUET PG registration starts early, and you need to register for IIT JAM and CUET PG simultaneously.  While JEST registration begins in February, probably after the conclusion of the JAM exam.

The primary goal of a student must be to get admission to the IIT JAM score sharing institutes. Choose other options if no choice is left. If you have scored above the JAM qualifying cutoff, then participate in the counselling process for admission to IITs, NITs, and other result-sharing institutes. IITs counselling will be conducted by JAM authorities, while the counselling for other participating institutions will be done through CCMN. Participate in all rounds of counselling. Look for opportunities and grab them.

If you have a good grip over the concepts, then it wont be tough to prepare for the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST). Below are a few preparation tips for JEST exam.

  • Compare IIT JAM and JEST syllabus. Filter the common topics. Primary focus on the new topics.
  • Prepare a study timetable. Dedicate 9 to 10 hours for preparation.
  • Clear all doubts. If you have any doubts during preparation, seek help of faculty, or an online platform whatever is easily approachable.
  • Revision is the most major part of preparation. While learning new topics, keep reviewing the common syllabus. It should be done regularly.
