Many students get into a dilemma whether they should take admission in any college or wait for admission in their desired college when they secure low scores/ ranks in their entrance exams. Keep on trying for your desired college while doing that, take admission in other colleges so that your year is not wasted.
What if the entrance score is low or below your expectations?
Admission in VIT University (VIT) is decided basis the score and rank secured by the student. In case, your entrance score is low or below your expectations then you have to wait for counselling. The campus is decided on the basis of rank secured, if you have secured a rank under 10-20k then it makes you eligible for Vellore campus counselling. After Vellore, Chennai campus is becoming an option and then Bhopal and other campuses.

What to do when the score is low completely depends on the preferences of the candidate like ‘a good campus with a nice crowd and personal development’ or selective branch with the average crowd. If the candidate wants to continue their career in a specific field i.e. they are more concerned for branch then they must wait for the last round of counselling and if not, then they could opt for any branch.
Drop a year or not?
I don’t think that a candidate would drop a year for VIT, so in case your score is low or not sufficient for blocking a seat in your desired branch then wait for the third and fourth round of counselling or last round of counselling you will surely get something.
Although campus may be different but I personally suggest not dropping your year for VIT.
Best colleges one can get with low scores
- There is nothing like a good college or a bad college. If you are going into VIT it’s all about their campuses and branch
- If you have a low score then there are two options:
- Wait till the last round counselling it might help to get the best among all the VIT campuses
- Go to the main counselling centre as they also consider sports quota, management quota, and there are some other modes through which you can get admission on a seat
Should one wait for the subsequent counselling session?
Yes! There is no issue if the candidate waits for subsequent counselling session, VIT counselling goes till ninth or tenth round hence, there is also a chance for the candidate with lowest scores with a low rank. There could be a possibility that few candidates who cleared VITEEE with a good rank could opt for another college or universities (if they have appeared for exams for other colleges as well). In this case, counselling goes till the last round and waiting till then would increase your chances to get selected for your favourite college.
Should a candidate opt to attempt the exam again?
There is no issue if a candidate wants to reappear for the exam. But, in my personal opinion, one should not waste a year. If a candidate has cleared any of other entrance exam then they should take admission in the particular college and then think of re- attempting VITEEE in the next year. They should only consider changing if they secure a rank which would ensure their admission in the Vellore campus. Candidate should also consider fee and expenses of VIT while taking admission as it is one of the highest fees charging college in India.

The rank needed for admission at VIT Bhopal would depend on the category and chosen branch.
For the General AI category, the round 1 cutoff ranged from 50000 to 100000. Hence, the highest rank acceptable was 100000. Please know that other categories, rounds, etc., will have different cutoffs.
