Instead of giving yourself a shot if you compromise and get into some private college instead it just adds nothing to your well-being. All it does is it lets you in lifelong grief of not giving yourself a chance.
If the score is low, do not be disheartened. Things like this often happen because no one is perfect and you may mess up on the exam day; many brilliant students do. This is not the end of the path since now Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is conducted twice a year, so it is better for the students with respect to earlier situations when it used to occur once every year. Now, if you do not perform well in the January session, you can try your luck in the May session. Also, a low score is not the end of opportunities as you will know from the following.
Explore colleges based on JEE Main
Attempt next year
Well, taking a drop is not as easy as it seems to be. The need for extraordinary determination and ability to handle the pressure and the pressure of the confidence that your parents showed in you are the pre-requisites but still, none of this can stop you if you are a man or woman who believes in themselves. Instead of giving yourself a shot if you compromise and get into some private college instead it just adds nothing to your well-being. All it does is it lets you in lifelong grief of not giving yourself a chance.
So first of all if you get a low score look at all the prospective chances in colleges that you might get. If it is satisfactory then decide whether you want to join it or not. If you feel confident enough that you will be able to withstand peer pressure and home pressure to score better than this attempt then go for a drop. Do not think of enrolling in a college just to be safe because it will also have the attendance issues and everything which will hamper your true devotion towards your next attempt.
Colleges you can opt for
A low score and a low rank would not give you any satisfactory colleges, however, there is always some gold among coal. Hence, here is a list of colleges you can apply for even if you get a low score:
- National Insitute of Foundry & Forge Technology, Ranchi (Jharkhand).
- School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
- School of Planning and Architecture, I.P. Estate (New Delhi)
- School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh)
- Amity School of Engineering, Amity University, Gwalior (MP)
- Amity School of Engineering, Amity University, Lucknow (UP)
- BIT, Patna
- BIT, Ranchi
- KIIT, Bhubaneswar
- BIT, Deogarh
- Institute of Technology, Guru Ghasidas Vishawavidyalaya, Bilaspur (CG)
- K. Institute of Applied Physics & Technology, University of Allahabad, Allahabad- 211002 (UP)
- Mizoram University (Aizwal)
Wait for counselling session
In case you see you are not getting any seat allotment in the colleges that you have enrolled by the fourth round of counselling, then you should get over the failure and move on instead of waiting for the subsequent round results because it will only drain your confidence and make you lose hope. By the fourth round of counselling, you should get a seat in the college of your choice if the rank is satisfactory. Else you might get it in the open rounds. Get ready to prepare for the next attempt if you plan for a drop, otherwise, look for the best options available to you among private or semi-government institutions.
Prepare for May session
Sure or unsure about your January session performance, you should attempt the second session to be held in May. First, if you are confident that with a little bit more practice you can get more than the marks presently obtained. Second, if you have scored pretty bad and have no other option. The second reason seems obvious, whereas the first reason is the risk. Suppose if you have score 180, or say 98 percentile, it is a good score, but would you be able to get a 99 or above score in the next attempt for sure? Ask this question to yourself and seek the answer. Once you attempt the second JEE in May, the first attempt marks will be considered invalid, and in case you do bad, there will be no one to blame. You can only appear in JEE three times in your life.

Students who gave the JEE Main session 2 exam and want to take admission at IITs should start preparing for the JEE Advanced exam. Students with a more than 98th percentile should start to study for the JEE Advanced exam.
Those who have secured a percentile between 95th and 98th should focus more on

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
