The first and foremost thing, in case you have scored lower than your expectations in JEE Main, is to not be worried. Now, begin by figuring out your mistakes. Look out for the common mistakes that you have made in the exam, including time management.
Also, figure out if you left out some important topics or have not revised well. According to me, mistakes always help us to learn new things and overcome the errors made in the past. We need to learn from our mistakes and should perform well in our second attempt.
Explore colleges based on JEE Main
In my first attempt, I got selected in JEE Main but it was with a low score. I just crossed the boundary and reached a minimum score. Unfortunately, I was not selected for JEE Advanced, so my family told me that you have one more attempt to try it and I also wanted to crack JEE. I joined coaching and also practiced many test series to avoid scoring less in my next attempt. My performance in all test series was perfect and well-tried. I always try to work hard to achieve more than the previous attempt. I didn’t lose hope and keep on studying but the problem arose when I got to know that next year's paper pattern will completely change. I took up the challenge and tried to solve the questions but it took a lot of time. I thought I had bad luck and was also not selected in JEE Main. I was disappointed as my second attempt after so many initiatives also went wasted. My family then supported me and I gave all other examinations and also cracked them. Then I chose my college, accordingly. Today I think that I wasted my time by dropping a year. But, yes, I gained more knowledge and my concepts were also cleared.
Therefore, I want to tell other students that I tried hard and there is no harm in trying. Your knowledge is never wasted. I thought that it was wasted earlier but actually it wasn’t. So, always give it a try and if you clear the exam, you will never deny your decision.
Exams are all about 80 percent preparation and 20 percent luck. There are always a few ways that can help you get your answers. The most basic question that comes in our mind is whether to drop a year or not. So, ask yourself whether you have the potential to crack JEE Main or not. You should make up your mind first and then go for it. Every student has interests in a particular subject, so they should focus more on their interests. Students should also think beforehand that, can they bear the workload? This type of question should be asked to yourself then the final decision should be taken. Here decision making plays an important role as you should be firm and confident in your decision for dropping a year or not?
According to me, there is a high probability to crack this exam in the first attempt i.e., in Class 12. So, work hard as much you can in your Class 12th as the basics start from there. You need to make your base strong to crack JEE.
If you have a low score in JEE Main, don't panic, there are lots of other options too. Don't depend only on JEE as there are other good engineering institutions that take separate exams. Likewise, UPTU, BITS PILANI, VIT, BVPCOEP, MIT, MHCET, Thapar, CUSAT are some of the exams which you can give and make your future. These exams are not as tough as JEE.
If you also wait for counseling, then the first thing is to check the previous year’s cut off rank by online search mode. After this, check on your rank and then match it with the same. Now, if you think you will get a seat then you should definitely wait. According to me, Practice making a man perfect. If you have confidence then you should try again to crack JEE and believe in yourself. Keep on motivating yourself and you will definitely get the results one day. Also, hard work really pays off. There are only 10-20% chances to get selected in JEE so trying itself is a great achievement. Now you must be thinking that what happens to the other 80% of students? The answer is that all the subjects of engineering are the same for all other institutions and nowadays companies want the best students. They want knowledgeable candidates and not the institute from which they belong. Many students get selected and take back a good package that is not JEE passed out. They also compete with other students. Even, in my college, many students get a starting package of over Rs 20 lakh per annum. There are also more options after graduation like Gate for M.tech and many other options for Government jobs like IES, PSU, etc. Thus, take a sound decision of your career and always look for options.

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?

- Even for lower-demand branches (Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgy), closing ranks are usually within 2–2.5 Lacs (General category).

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
