IIT Bombay has clarified that no such campus is in the works. Instead, it has partnered with Tohoku University to focus on joint programs

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has dispelled rumors of establishing a stand-alone campus in Japan, confirming instead that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tohoku University, Japan, to launch the IIT Bombay-Tohoku University Joint Academic and Research Program.

This collaboration marks a significant step in fostering India-Japan educational ties through a dual-degree initiative focused on research.

Addressing Campus Rumor

Several news publications had recently speculated that IIT Bombay was planning to set up a stand-alone campus in Japan. However, IIT Bombay has denied these claims, clarifying that no such campus is in the works. Instead, the partnership with Tohoku University will focus on joint programs, enabling student and faculty exchanges, as well as collaborative research projects, without the establishment of a physical campus in Japan.

The MoU, signed earlier this year, establishes a joint academic and research program that will begin with a dual-degree initiative centered on research. Students in this program will have the opportunity to earn degrees from both IIT Bombay and Tohoku University, benefiting from the combined expertise of two globally renowned institutions. The initiative aims to tackle global challenges through innovative research, leveraging IIT Bombay’s strengths in technology and engineering alongside Tohoku University’s leadership in science and interdisciplinary studies.

Both institutions are open to the possibility of evolving this partnership into a Joint Institute over time, subject to approvals from their respective senates and governments. Such a development could further deepen academic collaboration between India and Japan, creating a more integrated platform for research and education.
