Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main is one of the most popular engineering entrance exam conducted in the country. In 2016, around 12 lakh students registered to take the JEE Main engineering entrance exam.
Most students consider JEE Main as their stepping stone to join the IITs because as per rules only the top 2.2 lakh candidates in JEE Main are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced.
Students who want to become future engineers, these days, start preparing for JEE right from Class VI. So, if they do not make it to the rank cut-off it can be quite a disheartening experience.
Explore colleges based on JEE Main
So, I would like to advise students that – do not take it to hear if you are not able to make it to the cut-off list of JEE Main 2017 and to help make this difficult time a little easier, I am listing few steps you can take to channelise your energies in the right direction:
Search for options apart from NITs and IITs
Yes, you can make it to the best of institutes by clearing JEE Main and JEE Advanced. However, not getting admission in these colleges is not the end of the road. You have an ocean of opportunities before you, all you need to do is be receptive to change and open to researching the opportunities you have at hand.
Also, it is not true that you can have a successful future only with an IIT/NIT tag. Success ultimately depends on the kind of effort you are willing to put in for your future.
A good brand name can get you a job easily but most companies these days hire candidates on merit and not on the brand value of the institute where they have studied.
Adopt a hobby
Try and live your life for your own self for some time. Explore the things you like doing and enhance your personality. Try making a routine for yourself wherein you do only those things which you love doing. Try to create a positive atmosphere around you so that you can rejuvenate and thereafter focus on the goal at hand.
Some good hobbies to pursue include – yoga, meditation, walking, painting, dancing, music etc.
Do not pay attention to what your relatives, neighbours etc, have to say about you not making it to the cut-off list. Do not let anyone judge you because you have done nothing wrong.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is to see life from a new angle. It is important to realise that everything that happens, happens for a reason and on judgement day, you will be able to figure out the reason behind why each some wrongs happened with you. Always be willing to look at the silver lining of the cloud.
Hang out with friends
Friends and I mean only the really close ones are your support system and so in such a situation, it is ideal to look up to them for comfort. Also, if you go by my advice then, you should plan an outstation trip with friends. Go to any place you wanted to go to but couldn’t because of your jam-packed study schedule.
Change your surroundings and you will feel better about everything. Under no circumstances should you plan to lock yourself in your room or your house.
Do not be afraid to face people. They are in no way superior to you. If anyone says anything hurtful to you just laugh it off and move on. They have no say over your life and they do not know what it is like to be in your shoes.
Spend time with family
Be open to spending some quality time with your family, especially your parents. You may not have realised they are the best company to have. Believe it or not even in your darkest and weakest of moments they will always be proud of you and love you with all their hearts.
In your hectic schedule since you started preparing for JEE, you may not have realised how much you had been ignoring your parents and their needs. And you are not to blame for this also but now is the chance to make up for all the times you missed being around them.
You had been living with your books as long as you can remember, so by any means, this time away from books can act as a welcome change for you.
Also, life is as good or as bad as you want it to be. So, take any situation in a positive stride and make the most of it.
Take a drop year
Do not give up on life. If you feel that JEE is not the way to go in your life then plan your future accordingly. But if you feel that your calling lies in studying engineering degree programmes at NITs and IITs, then I would suggest that you should recharge your energy and then prepare again with full vigour.
Also, since you have just given the JEE exam you will have a better idea about what to expect in the exam as compared to freshers and you can use this experience in preparing in a better way for the exam, the next year.
Be hopeful
In the end, I would like to say that always be hopeful in life. Life sometimes serves you apples and at other instances gives you lemons. Good and bad are different sides of the same coin. So, if anything bad happens with you always have hope in your heart that the tides will soon change and you will get what you want.
The key here is to always be open for hardwork because there is no shortcut to success. People, who have a target/goal in mind and work a little each day to reach that goal, can never be failures. So, follow such a policy in life and be rest assured that you will be able to reach your goal.

With a 70 percentile in JEE Main (General category) and being from Andhra Pradesh (AP), here's a clear picture of your admission chances:

With a JEE Main rank of 81,473, you have a realistic chance of admission to NIT Srinagar, but mostly in branches other than Computer Science or IT. Based on the 2025 cutoffs, you are more likely to get Mechanical, Civil, or possibly Electrical Engineering under the Home State quota.
