How to get into FAANG companies through GATE

Here is a step-by-step guide by how you can grab a job at FAANG companies through GATE 2026 scores -

Step 1: Crack GATE with a good rank to enter Tier-1 institutes, such as IITs and IISc

A good rank in GATE for admission to IITs is mainly under 200. However, the GATE cutoff can vary depending on the specialisation, branches, category, and different IITs.

TIP: Aim for a GATE rank under 200 to get into top IITs like IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, and IIT Delhi

Check expected GATE cutoff scores for different levels of IITs -

IITs (Popularity-Wise) Required GATE cutoff scores
Top IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras) 850+
Mid-tier IITs (IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Roorkee) 450 to 600
New IITs (IIT Hyderabad, IIT Palakkad) under 500

Start your GATE preparation early. Build concepts and revise as many times as possible. Practice GATE old question papers to understand the exam structure.

PRO-TIP: Focus on high-weightage topics. For example, for GATE CS, give special importance to DSA, CN, OS, and TOC chapters, as they carry heavy marks on the GATE question paper.

Step 2- Choose FAANG-relevant branch/discipline

All the FAANG companies look out for graduates from the following specialisations -

  • Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
  • Machine Learning
  • Cyber Security and Information Systems

Step 3- Build Technical Knowledge and Skills

Candidates are advised to build a strong foundation in core CS subjects like DSA, DBMS, OS, CN, AI/ML. Also, take elective courses in ML, AI, NLP, and Deep Learning. Participate in hackathons and coding competitions held on campus. Do rake parts in the coding contests held online. Learn programming languages used by FAANG companies (Python, Java, C++).

Step 4: Intern at Startups or Product-Based Companies

Your first internship is the key to career growth. Even if the FAANG companies do not visit your campus placements, go for internships to strengthen your resume and networking profile.

Here's what you can do: intern at mid-sized companies doing work in cloud, backend, ML, or systems design to build real-world applications first. Later, you can apply for an internship at Google Research India, Amazon India, or Meta Developers ' Programme (off-campus).

Step-5: Skills that matter to FAANG recruiters to be FAANG-ready

FAANG recruiters mainly prioritise candidates with strong coding skills, particularly in data structures and algorithms, along with problem-solving skills and communication skills. Here are some of the key skills and attributes that the candidates must look for -

Key Skills and Proficiency Focus on
Technical proficiency Data Structures and Algorithms, Systems Operations, System design and Computer networks - these are highly essential for FAANG companies.
Problem solving Analytical thinking, creativity and adaptability
Communication and soft skills development Being able to explain the technical concepts clearly, the ability to collaborate and showcasing leadership qualities

Step 6: Strong Alumni Network & Resume Value

Having IIT/IISc or top-tier institute credentials can help you:

  • Stand out in job applications

  • Get referrals to FAANG companies

  • Secure internships in startups or product-based firms that act as stepping stones

How Long Does It Take to Get Into FAANG After GATE 2026?

It typically takes two to three years to get into a FAANG company through the GATE scores. However, some students also get jobs in the first year of their MTech if they have a good skill set, experience, and an outstanding academic and career profile.

Getting a job in a FAANG company using GATE scores may not be a conventional career path, but a smarter way to utilise your GATE score, and it is entirely possible. As the GATE 2026 scorecard is valid for three years, candidates can use their GATE scores/rank to get admission to top IITs and IISc, with the right set of technical skills, and consistent effort in building their resume and projects.

Whether you are targeting a Software Development Engineer (SDE) role at Amazon or an AI Research role at Google, your journey can begin with GATE if you take the right steps.
