Lakhs of students who are set to appear for the April and May sessions of JEE Main are in a dilemma over the exam dates and struggle with preparations as everything seems uncertain.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) postponed of the JEE Main 2021 April and May sessions keeping in mind the health and safety of students amid the rising COVID-19 cases.
Shiksha speaks with students to know how they are dealing with the situation. Here’s what they have to say.
Exam delay will hamper college admissions
Harsith Jain, a JEE aspirant, said, “I appeared for the February and March sessions of JEE Main 2021 and wanted to improve in the next sessions, but the exams got delayed. The government should soon announce CBSE and JEE exam dates for both sessions so that college admissions do not suffer. “
Explore colleges based on JEE Main
Harsith, also a student of Government Model School, Sector 19, Chandigarh, said, “I am doing an online course in automobile engineering to know the basics in the field as I want to get admission to Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. At KIT also, admissions have started, but I can’t apply as they take students on the basis of Class 12 marks. I don’t know when they will announce Class 12 exam dates as only after that I can take the next course of action.”
Hanging in balance as no clarity over exams
Raising similar concerns, Sakshi Sehgal, another aspirant from Khanna, Punjab, said, “We are hanging in the balance as there is no clarity on exam dates. The authorities should take a stand as this is affecting us mentally. My career is at stake and I can’t really focus on my studies.”
She said, “I am more worried about my JEE exam. The authorities should announce the dates as soon as possible so that we can prepare accordingly.”
JEE preparation, a long drawn out process
Kajal Yadav from Kanpur said, “The government is repeatedly delaying exams, which is only worsening the situation for students. I took the February exam and was also planning to appear for the April and May sessions. Now, since the exams have been postponed, I am unable to concentrate on studies. I request the government to kindly relieve us from this stress by announcing the exam dates so that we can start applying in colleges.”
She further said, “Also, there is some limit to preparation. We have been preparing for so long only to find that the exams have been delayed.”
Dropped one year to prepare for JEE
Sharing similar sentiments, Sakshi Yadav said, “I dropped a year only to prepare for JEE Main. I already gave a miss to the February and March sessions and was relying on the upcoming sessions, but now with the postponement of exams, I have decided to apply in private colleges as they admit students on the basis of marks obtained in Class 12 or state government exams.”
The final dates for JEE Main 2021 exams are expected to be announced after the declaration of dates of CBSE Class 12 board exams. The CBSE has proposed two ways to conduct the exam, one is to hold the exams for 19 major subjects only and the other is to conduct exams in two phases – from July 15 to August 1 and from August 5 to 26. In such case, the deferred April and May sessions of JEE Main 2021 are likely to be conducted in July-August or September.

Guru Nanak Institute of Technology accepts JEE Main scores for admission in BTech programme. However, it is not compulsory. Aspirants with WBJEE or CE-AMPAI scores can also get admission in BTech provided they also meet the eligibility criteria.

Students who gave the JEE Main session 2 exam and want to take admission at IITs should start preparing for the JEE Advanced exam. Students with a more than 98th percentile should start to study for the JEE Advanced exam.
Those who have secured a percentile between 95th and 98th should focus more on

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
