A low JEE Main score is not the end of an aspirant’s engineering journey. There are many ways in which they can succeed and pursue a career in engineering. Here are some of the frequently asked questions from aspirants who score low in JEE Main.
Should I take admission in the first attempt?
This is a major predicament for some students. It is recommended that an aspirant take admission in the first attempt as this will help in saving a year of preparing and re-attempting. There is no assurance that you score well in the next attempt. Hence, it is a smarter choice to move on and begin your education. Time is money and since learning at home is a choice favoured by not many students, one more year of instructing will cost you, which can be heavy on the pocket.

Would it be advisable to take a drop and expectation of clearing JEE Main one year from now?
As you need to get ready for your board tests and JEE Main at the same time, it might happen that you are not ready to commit your whole vitality towards JEE Main. It is a state of tension building because of the approaching tests. This might make you question your execution of JEE Main preparation or with the idea of not getting the ideal school or B.Tech branch. In this situation, you may think about dropping a year and attempting JEE Main in the next session. This pre-planning can make you perform at a much higher level than earlier. Taking a break for a year may sound better, as it implies a year of additional time for preparing.
I didn't actually bomb the JEE Main in my first expectation as I did clear it, however, my rank was so low that I couldn’t get admission to any branch in an administration school. After my results were out, I realised that I needed to drop regardless, as my rank, though terrible, was still obviously superior to my desire thoughts. I was one of those folks who didn't think about in the month prior to the test. I thought of giving it another shot and closed any kind of interruptions.
What kind of issues I will face?
- 1. Society: How to handle those run-of-the-mill relatives who might attempt to mentally programme you or your family of pursuing a certain career path and its failures and success. Some regular words being- that the X fellow dropped and later wound up with a more terrible score than earlier or got diverted completely.
- Loneliness and depression: No companions, no school, the way of life changes quickly and not every person can come to terms with it. All of your old companions would join their separate universities and seeing them put pictures of their new school life on different web-based social networking sites. This could be discouraging, however, the more concerning issue is that you are without a companion in such a scenario.
- Fear of disappointment: There is a massive dread of disappointment among droppers because of the undeniable explanation that they are droppers.
- Health: In my situation, since I wasn't setting off to any training, it didn't take me long to break records as far as weight. The lean person in school weighed 85 kgs during the preparation.
- Too much time: Droppers end up doing useless stuff for more than half of the time they have as they feel that they have plenty of time.
How could I handle these issues?
- My just assessment to people around me, who were judging me, was that I did not care what they thought. The harder part was dealing with my family, who certainly paid attention to these people.
- I realised this would be an issue consequently I had made a WhatsApp group, mainly containing droppers from all over the nation and it was a colossal achievement. It guaranteed simple material access, question explaining and critically a group of friends of like. Coming to the old companions, I was not much in contact with any of those all through the drop time frame and there was no possibility of their online life posts as I was off all the social media.
- You need to get this out of your head that you are a dropper and it is your last possibility throughout everyday life and a great deal is in question and all that stuff. Try not to make it an actual existence as it is just a one-day issue.
- I am a little more than 70 kgs now and trust me, it (weight reduction) was not a serious deal.
- Completing the syllabus was a serious deal for me.
Which colleges can I get admission to with a low GATE score?
There are hardly any great universities that take low cutoff. A portion of these are (NOT in the order of recommendation):
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management
- Galgotias University
- Manipal University
- UPES Dehradun
- Amity School of Engineering, Amity University (Gurugram, Jaipur & Noida)
- Jayoti Vidyapeetham Women's University
- Jodhpur National University
- Lovely Professional University
- College of Engineering
- BIT (Deogarh, Patna & Ranchi)
- KIIT
Should I wait for the subsequent counselling sessions?
You will lose nothing if you wait for the counselling session. Hold up till the last round, under these conditions :
1) There is no way that you will lose the seat which you are holding, yet it might be upgraded. This means that dispensed decisions may go up. So on the off chance that you show restraint enough to pause, hold up until the last round. I don't suggest the spot rounds, however, that is altogether up to you.
2) Stay watchful. Try not to bank just advice, keep your choices open.
3) Be persistent. The first round apportioning, isn't conclusive, as there are numerous schools such as BITS PILANI, IIITs, DTU, etc., with great notoriety. However, not taking an interest in JoSAA, understudies getting seats there will pull back from this guiding, bringing about redesigning your decision.
Should I opt to attempt JEE Main again in May
It, as a rule, happens that you get questions you didn’t expect to be asked during the exam. Practice hard, that every question you get is attemptable.
What's more, in the event that you don't get into IIT, you have your nuts and bolts cleared. So, IIT isn't your 'need' any longer. Study from any other institute, with all your energy, and be a triumph.
Recall Yashwant (writer of 'Let Us C', it's the most well-known book for C language), he dropped from VJTI, Mumbai. Do you realise any Indian who'd know more than him about C? Likely not. In this way, make progress toward information.
Despite everything you have an opportunity to score well in different passages, don't let the present dissatisfaction make a disillusioning future for you.

Students who gave the JEE Main session 2 exam and want to take admission at IITs should start preparing for the JEE Advanced exam. Students with a more than 98th percentile should start to study for the JEE Advanced exam.
Those who have secured a percentile between 95th and 98th should focus more on

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?
- NITs/IIITs/GFTIs Cutoffs:
- Even for lower-demand branches (Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgy), closing ranks are usually within 2–2.5 Lacs (General category).

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
