NLU Courses

The National Law Universities (NLUs) are among the most reputed law institutions in India, making admission to these colleges highly competitive. For aspirants exploring NLUs for the first time, this article provides a well-researched overview of all the courses offered across NLUs in India. At present, there are 25 NLUs offering law programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral (PhD) levels. In the recent years, NLUs in India have started offering online certificate and diploma in law specialisations, so that aspirants from anywhere can pursue the course. Q:   How many times AILET is conducted?
A:

AILET is now conducted once in a year, and in month of December. The exam authority, National Law University, Delhi always conducted AILET once in a year, except for year 2022, when the exam was held twice I. e. once in June and then in December. However, the exam authority also notified that it's one time modification, and from AILET 2024 onwards, the exam will be held once in a year. Q:   Why is AILET exam important?
A:

AILET is important because it is the only entrance exam that law aspirants can qualify and be eligible for most prominent National Law University in India; i.e. NLU Delhi. It is also one of the most competitive law entrance exams for admission to NLU Delhi, as it doesn't accept CLAT score. Apart from this, many Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs) in India accept AILET LL. M. scores for the recruitment of candidates. 

Q:   What is the duration of CLAT PG exam?
A:

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) conducted the CLAT LLM 2026 Exam on December 7, 2025 in pen-paper test mode. The CLAT PG Exam 2026 was held for duration of two hours; i.e. from 2 pm to 4 pm. Candidates had to answer 120 questions in the given time frame. The scores of CLAT LLM 2026 score will be accepted by 19 NLUs in the country.

Besides, BA LLB (Hons.) and LLM programme, NLUD also offers the following law courses:

NLU Courses Eligibility Criteria

Q:   What is the CLAT exam duration?
A:

The CLAT exam duration is two hours for both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate. It will have 120 multiple choice questions. For each correct answer one makrs will be given and -0.25 will be deducted for incorrect ones.

Q:   What is the mode of CLAT Exam?
A:

The mode of the CLAT exam is offline or paper-based mode. Candidates are handed over hardcopy of CLAT question paper and OMR sheets to answer the questions. Candidates will have to be careful while filling OMR sheet as any scratch or cuts in the OMR sheet will lead to disqualification. 

Q:   Who conducts the CLAT Exam?
A:

The CLAT Exam is conducted by consortiumofnlus.ac.in. All those candidates who are looking forward to getting admission at NLUs must appear for the exam. Apart from NLU Delhi, admission to all the NLUs are done through CLAT. 

UG Eligibility - Candidates seeking admissions to the five-year integrated LLB courses at NLUs have to fulfil the eligibility criteria as under: 

  • They must have passed Class 12th or equivalent examination with 45% marks if belonging to General/ OBC/ PWD/ NRI/ OCI categories and, 40% marks if belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribes (ST).
  • Those appearing for the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply, however, they should submit the proof of qualification at the time of seat allotment and final admission. 

PG Eligibility - Candidates should have completed a three-year or five-year LLB degree with at least 50% marks (45% marks if belonging to SC/ST categories). Those who are appearing for the final semester examination or awaiting results are also eligible to apply. 

PhD Eligibility - Candidates should have completed a master's degree in law with a B grade or 55% marks. 

All the NLUs in India except for NLU Delhi offer admission to UG and PG courses on the basis of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) score. For PhD courses, each NLU conducts it own all India PhD entrance test or through the University Grants Commission's National Eligibility Test (UGC NET)/ Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

NLU Delhi conducts its own entrance examination known as the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) through which it also admits candidates in PhD law courses.

However, some of the colleges offer direct admissions through Management Quota. Where would you like to pursue the LLB course from?

Hi Punitha, there is no restriction on age limit or highest education qualification for pursuing Bachelor of Law course. You are eligible to pursue a three-year LLB course which a person can pursue only after graduation. It would be best to appear for an LLB entrance like Delhi University LLB, LSAT
