NEET PG 2021 Counselling: Why Doctors are Protesting?

Doctors are angry as NEET PG 2021 counselling process is yet to start. They believe that the delay is leading to staff crunch in different departments. As COVID-19 cases are on the rise once again, hospitals could face series issue in providing necessary healthcare services to people due to shortage of manpower. NEET PG exam is usually held in January but it has been a delay of around one year which has affected the whole academic cycle. There is huge pressure on junior doctors as third year batch has passed out and new batch has yet to join. In November 2020, NBE had postponed NEET PG 2021 exam to April 2021 amid Corona outbreak. The exam further delayed to September 2021. NEET PG 2021 result was announced on September 20. Residents Doctors are fuming as they have no idea when will the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) announce dates for the NEET PG counselling 2021. Government is putting onus on the Supreme Court for the delay in the admission process.

Pending Court Case in NEET PG Counselling

A clutch of petitions were filed in the Supreme Court, challenging the government decision for providing quota to OBC and EWS category students. On July 29, the Centre had announced that OBC and EWS category students would be provided 27 and 10 percent reservation respectively in All India Quota seats. The Supreme Court had raised objection against the income criteria set for EWS category. The Apex Court had directed the centre to explain how it came to INR 8 lakh income criteria to EWS category. A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said the similar criteria is for OBC category as well. “You can’t just pull out Rs 8 lakh from anywhere. There must be some data. Sociological, demographic,” the court had said in a hearing dated October 21.

In November, the government told the court that it would revisit INR 8 lakh income criteria for EWS and a final decision will take at least four-week. The Centre had provided assurance that the counselling will not be held before the final decision over the reservation issue.

Demands of Doctors

Doctors want the issue to get resolved and counselling to start soon. As per them, government should submit reports and court must expedite the hearing process. Meanwhile, FORDA has given a list of demands to end the stir. The Association says that till all the three demands are met, the residents doctors will not join duty. They want a date for the counselling after next court hearing on January 6, apology from concerned authority for manhandling doctors, and withdrawal of FIRs against protesting doctors.
