IIT Bombay: President Droupadi Murmu will be inaugurating India’s pioneering CAR T-Cell therapy for treating advanced blood cancer at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. This advancement introduces a beacon of hope for Indian patients by providing the therapy at a substantially lower price of INR 40 lakh, compared to the prohibitive cost of INR 5 crore in the US, making it unattainable for numerous individuals.

CAR T-Cell Therapy

CAR T-Cell therapy, a living drug, offers a customised approach to treatment. Unlike the routine schedule of chemotherapy treatments aimed at fighting the disease, CAR T-Cell therapy is tailored to each patient. In this treatment, T-cells (immune cells) are extracted from the patient's blood and subsequently engineered in a laboratory to transform them into CAR-T cells, which are immune cells equipped to battle cancer.

This process involves genetically altering the T-cells to produce chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) that target cancer cells specifically. Once modified, these cells are reintroduced into the patient's bloodstream, where they are programmed to seek out and eliminate cancer cells within the body.

Led by Dr. Gaurav Narula, a 58-year-old paediatric haematologist-oncologist at Tata Hospital, and Dr. Rahul Purwar, a 46-year-old faculty member at IIT-Bombay in Powai, this project seeks to develop a new form of CAR T-Cell therapy designed for extended presence in the body.

IIT Bombay Placement

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is facing a tough time during its job placement season. A recent report shows that a surprising 36% of IIT Bombay students have not received job offers yet, highlighting how the economic slowdown is affecting campus hiring. Out of 2,000 students who signed up for job placements, 712 are still waiting for offers, according to HT reports.
