IIT JAM 2026: Result (OUT), Cutoff, Counselling

IIT JAM passing mark varies category wise for each test paper. Students need to check the JAM scorecard to know the minimum passing marks for the test. Candidates belonging to "GEN" category need to score 25+ marks to qualify in the Biotechnology paper and 27+ marks in Chemistry. The minimum passing marks for GEN category are mentioned below.

For each Test Paper All India Merit list will be prepared based on AIR. The number of candidates included in the All India Merit List will depend on the total number of seats available in each category (GEN/ OBC-NCL/ EWS/ SC/ ST/ PwD) in a given subject.

IIT JAM scores will be used for admission to over 2000 seats for postgraduate programmes such as MSc and MA at IISc and various NITs, IIEST Shibpur, SLIET, DIAT through Centralized Counselling for MSc / MSc (Tech.) Admission (CCMN). 
In addition, JAM scores will be used for admission to the four Integrated Ph D Programmes and two MSc Programmes at Indian Institute of Science (IISc). JAM 2025 scores are likely to be used by various other institutes such as Jawaharlal Nehru

The difficulty level of IIT JAM is moderate to tough. The difficulty level for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is tougher as compared to the IIT JAM subjects of Economics, Biotechnology and Geology.

If we compare the difficulty level of IIT JAM examination with CUET PG exam, ISI Admission test, NEST exam, IISER Entrance examination, then it will be found that IIT JAM examination is comparetively tougher than the other top colleges/ universities entrance examination.

Yes, but not in IITs, NITs, or IISc. Central Universities offer admission to the MSc degree through CUET PG. Students must appear for the state level or university level entrance exam for admission to the MSc degree.

Physics is one of the most sought course of choice among students who want to take admission in IITs, IISc, etc. It is for this reason alone that IIT JAM Physics paper is extremely competitive. IIT JAM Admit Card 2026 is an online document which acts as the hall ticket to the centre and carries candidates' personal and exam paper details. Candidates will have to log in to the exam website and download the hall ticket in PDF format.

IIT JAM exam was conducted for 100 marks. The question paper comprises 60 questions. Students need to obtain 75+ marks to qualify for the entrance test.

IIT JAM qualifying cut-off is the minimum marks required to pass entrance test. Each paper has a different cutoff marks. The expected cutoff for IIT JAM 2026 is mentioned below.

In IIT JAM 2026 exam pattern, there is no deduction of marks for unanswered questions. Such questions are not taken into consideration while calculating the total marks.

JAM 2026 Examination was conducted for SEVEN subjects, also referred to as Test Papers: Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA),  Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH). The medium for all the Test Papers is English only.

JAM 2026 examination pattern is divided in such a way that the exam was conducted in the form of three sections ie., Section A, B and C.

Section - B contains a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) carrying two marks each. Each MSQ is similar to MCQ but with the difference that MSQ may have one or more than one correct choice (s) out of the four given choices. The candidate is awarded full credit only if all the correct answer (s) and no wrong answers are selected. Candidates can mark the answer (s) by clicking the choice (s). There is no negative marking or partial marking for MSQ.

JAM exam centre is allocated based on students' preferences. Students have to make the choice of test cities while filling the JAM application form. The authority releases the list of IIT JAM exam centres online.

IIT JAM 2026 examination was conducted on February 15, 2026. The exam was conducted in two sessions:

 Session 1 -  9:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Session 2 - 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM

There are around 3000 seats in postgraduate programmes at 21 IITs for the academic year 2026-27. JAM 2026 Scores will be used to admit the candidates subject to satisfying the ERs and MEQs and any other necessary requirements, without any additional interview or written test.
JAM scores will be used for admission to over 2000 seats for postgraduate programmes such as M.Sc. and M.A. at IISc and various NITs, IIEST Shibpur, SLIET, DIAT through Centralized Counselling for M.Sc / M.Sc. (Tech.) Admission (CCMN).

Well, if you have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, all three in your Bachelor's degree you should first understand and analyze that which subject you like the most and you are highly interested in. Then devote atleast a year and evaluate the scope of M.Sc in that particular subject, study it and then select the subject. Don't be in a rush, take your time.

Know the exam pattern

The first and foremost thing that candidates need to be well acquainted with is to know IIT JAM exam pattern. IIT JAM 2026 for Physics consists of three sections wherein candidates need to attempt – MCQs, MSQs and NAT questions.

Know the marking scheme

The next step for exam prep is to know the marking scheme for IIT JAM. This is important as by knowing the marking scheme, aspirants can have a plan of action in place to avoid negative marking wherever possible in the exam.

In IIT JAM for Physics, there is a negative marking in Section A only. There is no negative marking in Section B and Section C of the exam.

Know the syllabus

Next, aspirants need to be thorough with IIT JAM syllabus. Here, candidates need to be well acquainted with the topics that they need to ace to score well in the science entrance exam. The topics that form a part of IIT JAM syllabus include:

Prepare a timetable

Candidates should prepare a timetable for how they want to complete and revise the syllabus for the Physics paper in the IIT JAM exam. Also, while preparing the timetable candidates need to include adequate time to solve practice papers and thereafter revise important topics for IIT JAM preparation.

Know important formulas

While preparing different topics for the IIT JAM Physics paper, candidates should ensure that they keep jotting down the important formulae for each topic. This will prove extremely helpful at the time of revision as students would have a consolidated list of all the important formulae for IIT JAM Physics preparation which they can easily refer to before taking the exam.

Read important books

Aspirants should make a list of important books to read for IIT JAM physics exam preparation. Here, candidates should go through one or two important books and thereafter prepare well for each section of this Science exam.

The following items or objects were not be allowed to be carried to the IIT JAM 2026 exam centres.

• Stationery items such as test-based material (written/printed), papers, notes, Pencil box, pouches, geometry box, pen, scale/ruler, eraser, etc.
• Electronic devices such as calculators, cameras, electronic pens, scanners, etc.
• Accessories such as bags, belts, caps, goggles, wallets, etc.
• Devices used for communication such as mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth, fitness bands, earphones, pager, etc.
• Eatables (packed or home-cooked), thermos, etc.

Candidates had to select the IIT JAM exam centre city while filling out the application form. They had to enter as many as two exam cities in preferred order. The final decision is made by the exam authorities.

Candidates have to follow the steps given below to select the exam city of JAM 2026:

 1. Visit the JAM 2026 website.

2. In the Exam City Preference section of the JAM 2026 application form, select three cities in preferential order.

3. Complete the application process by paying the requisite application fee. The exam city preference can be changed during the application correction window.

Test takers can check the IIT JAM Admission List in the following manner:

• Candidates have to visit the website of IIT JAM. 
• Enter Enrolment ID or Email ID
• Enter Password
• Enter the correct Mathematical Expression
• Click on 'Submit'

In advance city intimation slip document candidates will only be intimated about the city where their exam centre has been allotted. The objective of this document is to help candidates prepare in advance regarding exam day travel or commute.

There are a total of 60 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. 

Section - C has a total 20 Numerical Answer Type questions, involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each. For NAT questions.

Scribes were arranged for those PwD candidates who had requested to be provided with a scribe at the time of application.
Qualification of the scribe arranged by test centre will NOT be more than the minimum eligibility criteria of JAM 2026. However, the qualification of the scribe is be matriculation (10th) or above. If there are Y candidates who require a scribe, it will be ensured that a panel of (Y+1) scribes is available at the exam centre so that every candidate can have an alternative scribe to choose for the services.

While uploading files candidates must ensure that they do so in suggested resolution. In case PDF file or printout does not display a clear photograph or signature candidates need to PDF resolution again and check for clarity. If it is still not clear enough, then they have to approach exam authorities and seek solutions.

IIT JAM 2026 entrance exam does not require students to stick to a specific dress code. You can typically wear casual outfits. However by wearing a formal apparel can benefit in having a decent and presentable look (e.g., wearing a shirt and trouser).

Some institutions may have specific guidelines (e.g., wear shirts or t-shirts, jeans or trousers etc).

Apart from IIT JAM 2026 admit card, candidates must carry these documents to exam centre:
