Taking a drop for a year is an opportunity and a slight risk as well. It's a tough decision and a life-changing decision. This article will help you with all the best possible options for all the scenarios and help you gain clarity and take the best decision fit for you.
Taking a drop is not a bad decision one can make. In many cases, students, even after clearing the examination with good marks took a drop of a year. The reason being that they wanted to improve and choose their desired branch and campus but couldn't make it in the first attempt. Though there is a common misconception that drop year is only for those who have good marks and wanted to improve. This is just not the case. I have witnessed many examples where many of my friends despite being having the poorest marks in the exam took year drop and after a year, again went for the exams and cleared it with flying colours. You need to analyse it on your own whether you just haven't studied for the exam because you didn't realise its importance or you just don't want to give the exam and it's not fit for you. If you believe you can clear it in the next attempt and you can bear all the other expenses and pressure, you can go for it. Else, you can either change your career path or go with the second case described below.
Explore colleges based on JEE Main
Here if you don't see the relevance of taking a drop year, the best option would be going for private college entrances. There are many big universities in the country which are giving top-notch education and exposure to students at affordable fee structures. I myself am studying at a private university and pursuing computer science engineering. I have visited almost all the IIT's and bigger colleges in the country. I have found very few differences in the academic pattern. Yes, there is a difference in the student quality but if you are hardworking than that hardly matters. Also, it'll get you a year boost than those who took one year drop.
Below are some good colleges and universities along with their assigned entrance test by appearing for which you can take admission in low scores:
- Lovely Professional University - LPUNEST/JEE MAINS
- SRM University - SRMJEEE/JEE MAINS
- VIT UNIVERSITY - VITEEE/JEE MAINS
- AMITY UNIVERSITY - (Separate Entrance/JEE MAINS)
- Manipal University - MOUET
- UPES Dehradun - (UPESEAT/JEE Mains)
You can also go for your state government college where "Home State Quota" is available, so you can get better ranking and stream even in lesser marks. At last, colleges do matter but after entering into colleges, it's all about the hard work one does and it's what makes the difference. Also, in a year drop, there is a risk involved and a bit pressure too. If you can bear that, you must go for a year of preparation, it's definitely worth to go for another campus.
Also, apart from engineering, you can also apply for other courses such as journalism, animation and media, theatre and arts, hotel management, etc. if you wish to change your stream.

Students who gave the JEE Main session 2 exam and want to take admission at IITs should start preparing for the JEE Advanced exam. Students with a more than 98th percentile should start to study for the JEE Advanced exam.
Those who have secured a percentile between 95th and 98th should focus more on

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?
- NITs/IIITs/GFTIs Cutoffs:
- Even for lower-demand branches (Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgy), closing ranks are usually within 2–2.5 Lacs (General category).

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
