Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has maintained that the state will not implement NEP 2020, calling it an attempt at "Hindi imposition.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Tamil Nadu government of misleading the public on the National Education Policy (NEP) and the PM SHRI scheme, claiming the state had initially agreed to implement NEP 2020 but later backtracked for political reasons.
In Parliament, Pradhan criticized DMK MPs for disrupting proceedings, stating, “Those who do not have concrete facts only want to shout back the truth. The government has no issue in allocating PM SHRI funds to Tamil Nadu, but they are not interested in it.”
He also questioned Tamil Nadu’s opposition to PM SHRI schools, asserting that “only Tamil will be the medium of instruction in these schools, so what is their issue?”
DMK MP Kanimozhi countered Pradhan’s remarks by submitting a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran dismissed claims that Tamil Nadu had agreed to implement NEP 2020, reaffirming the state's continued resistance to the policy and the three-language formula.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has maintained that the state will not implement NEP 2020, calling it an attempt at "Hindi imposition." He has argued that Tamil Nadu’s education policies should be determined by the aspirations of its people and not dictated by the Centre. Stalin has also demanded that education funds be released unconditionally, stating, “Just answer whether or not it is possible to release the funds for Tamil Nadu students from the taxes collected from us!”
Pradhan insisted that the Centre was not imposing any language and highlighted that states like Punjab, Karnataka, and Maharashtra had implemented NEP without opposition. However, Tamil Nadu has consistently rejected the three-language policy, maintaining its long-standing two-language formula.
