MBA Admission Process 2026

The MBA admission cycle in India is based on MBA entrance exam dates. As CAT, XAT, NMAT, SNAP exams are held in December-January, colleges accepting scores of these exams for admission begin their selection process from January 2026  onwards. Colleges accepting CMAT, MAT, ATMA, GMAT scores open application window March onwards. Many private B-schools keep their admission window open till September. Any candidate who plans to pursue an MBA programme in regular mode of education, must follow the process explained below.

Shortlist MBA Colleges of Your Choice

First of all, the candidates must shortlist the colleges they wish to pursue MBA or PGDM programme. College selection should be based the following factors:

  • Government/UGC Recognition
  • Eligibility criteria and cut offs
  • MBA course and specializations
  • Programme fees
  • Infrastructure, faculty and pedagogy
  • Placement record

Check MBA Admission Process and Selection Criteria

Most of the B-schools in India accept MBA students on the basis of an entrance exam score and personality assessment test which includes Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).

Some institutes offer direct admission on the basis of graduation scores but the number of such colleges is less. Such colleges usually fall in Tier 3 category. Admission process of such institutes include only two steps:

  • Filling the MBA application form
  • Payment of admission fees

Participate in WAT/GD/PI

If admission process of the MBA colleges that you have shortlisted includes entrance exam, WAT-GD-PI, you will be required to clear these rounds to be selected for admission. If the institute of your choice offers direct admission, you will be required to fill the admission form and pay the fees.

Written Ability Test: The WAT is a process in which candidates are given a topic to write a short essay on, explaining their point of view. It is about 250 words and one is given 15-20 minutes to write. WAT topics are generally from current affairs topics across fields.

Group Discussion: In this round, a bunch of students are group together to discuss a given topic. Every group member is invited to speak for a brief time before the floor is thrown open for discussion. Candidates must display their leadership skills and convincing ability.

Personal Interview: It is a personal interaction where a panel of experts, interview the candidate on the basis of their academics, work experience and career plan.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Which is better MAT or CMAT?
A:
MAT and CMAT have similar syllabus but the difficulty level is different. Both exams have Quantitative Aptitude Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, English and General Knowledge. CMAT has an additional section - Innovation and Entrepreneurship which was introduced in 2021. While MAT is an easy exam, CMAT is moderately tough but to say which is better totally depends upon the college a candidate is targeting for MBA Admission. The participating colleges for both exams are different. If a candidate's dream college accepts MAT score, then they appear for MAT but if their dream college accepts CMAT then they should appear for CMAT. The CMAT exam is conducted by the NTA only once in a year but MAT is conducted multiple times in a year. AIMA conducts MAT in February, May, September and December. So, unlike CMAT MAT gives a candidate the choice to appear for the exam when they are well prepared and improve test score in the same academic session. The benefit of CMAT or MAT is that former is accepted by all government and state universities/institutes whereas latter is accepted by mostly private institutes.
Q:   I am in my final year of Graduation. Can I apply for SNAP?
A:

Yes, you are eligible to apply for SNAP. Since there is minimum score requirement for SNAP, final year candidates will have to make sure that their minimum score of first and second year is above 50% (45% for reserved category).

Q:   Is SNAP easier than all other MBA entrance exams?
A:

Yes, SNAP can be considered easier than all other MBA entrance exams but one needs to still prepare for it with complete dedication. The SNAP may be considered easier as it is a 60-minute exam and the number of questions is also 60. The English section does not have RC passages and QA-DI are easy. Moreover, one can attempt it thrice in the same academic session and use the best score of all attempts to seek admission.

Q:   What are the SNAP cut off determining factors?
A:

SNAP cut offs are determined by:

  • Number of candidates in exam
  • Difficulty level
  • Number of candidates who passed
  • Pass percentage
  • High percentile range
  • Number of seats available

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the MBA selection criteria through SNAP?
A:

Candidates are selected on the basis of SNAP cut offs for the MBA admission round which consists of Group Exercise (GE), Personal Interview (PI) and Writing Ability Test (WAT). This round is held in February and March after the announcement of SNAP result.

Candidates who clear the GE-PI-WAT round are selected for MBA admission. The parameters for selection also include class 10, 12 and graduation scores, academic profile and work experience. All SIU institutes conduct Group Exercise, Writing Ability Test but individually.

Sectional SNAP cut offs may be evaluated for selection of candidate for Group Exercise, Writing Ability Test and Personal Interview. Scores of every section will be taken into consideration for shortlisting of candidates along with their academic record. Thus, candidates must ensure that they perform well enough in each section of the SNAP exam.

Q:   Does every CAT accepting college conduct GD/PI?
A:

Yes, the CAT accepting MBA colleges conduct either GD/PI or WAT/PI. Since MBA is a professional course about business and team management, personality assessment round is essential to ensure that the aspirant has the flair for management which can be polished during the programme. Communication skills, problem solving ability, management and leadership are essential qualities for MBA thus, every B-School conducts GD/PI or WAT/PI.

Q:   What is IIM Shortlist?
A:

IIM shortlist is the list of CAT test takers who make it to the second phase of IIM admission process, which is Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). The IIM shortlist is the list of candidates who are eligible to participate in the WAT-PI rounds of IIMs for MBA admission.

Q:   What if I do not make it to IIM shortlist? Do I still stand a chance to get admission?
A:

No, the students who don't make it to the IIM shortlist of a particular year, they will not be considered for admission. Such candidates can appear for CAT again the next year and try for admission. If a candidate doesn't make it to the first shortlist, they can wait for the second shortlist to release in which they might be selected.

IIM waitlist means the number students who are kept waiting for the second shortlist. The institutes select a number of students for admission out of which some miss the first list due to a few points. Such students are kept in waitlist incase any candidate from the first list chooses to not appear for WAT-PI. Those who are kept in the waitlist are invited for WAT-PI if there are seats remaining to be filled after WAT-PI round of the first batch of the students. Also read: IIM Waitlist Movement - Meaning and Past Trends

Q:   How is IIM shortlist prepared by the institutes?
A:

IIM shortlist is prepared on the basis of CAT cut off, class 10 score, class 12 score, graduation score, work experience (if any). To encourage diversity in the classroom the IIMs award extra points to female and transgender candidates at the time of shortlisting as well as final selection.

The participating Iims send the list of candidates shortlisted by them for the What-PI process to the institute conducting CAP. The CAP conducting IIM conducts the What-PI round for all the participating Iims. The IIM CAP conducting institute then share the What-PI scores and results of the candidates with the participating institutes. Those institutes then prepare the final shortlist for admission. Commonly asked questions
Q:   My graduation score is less than 50% in aggregate. Am I eligible for XLRI admission?
A:

Yes, candidates with less than 50 per cent in aggregate in graduation are eligible for admission to PGDM courses in XLRI. Candidates need to have minimum passing marks in Graduation. Candidates planning to seek admission to an MBA college other than XLRI must check its eligibility criteria as the minimum score requirement of AICTE approved colleges is 50 percent (45 percent for Reserved categories). But having 50 per cent and above score is not a guarantee for getting selected for admission. You will need to clear the admission round which is based on XAT cut off percentile. If you do not meet the XAT cut off percentile you will not be selected for XAT personal interview round, which is the main parameter for MBA admission in XLRI.

Q:   Is there any change in XAT exam pattern 2026?
A:

There is no change in the XAT exam pattern 2026. The structure of XAT 2026 question paper will be same as XAT 2025 question paper. There will be no essay writing this year.  Candidates will get 180 minutes to solve about 95 questions in MCQ format.

This selection is based on minimum CMAT cut off fixed by the institute. Admission through CMAT also includes assessment of candidates on the basis of other parameters such as academic record and work experience (not mandatory for all colleges). Overall, the admission process through CMAT includes selection of candidates on the basis of: 1. CMAT score 2. Class 10, 12 and graduation score 3. Work profile and other activities 4.
