Many students think Inorganic Chemistry in JEE Main is all about memorising random facts. But most "exceptions" are not random at all. Once students understand why an exception happens, they do not need to memorise it. NTA usually likes testing these exceptions in JEE Main because they show whether you understand the concept or just memorised a rule.

Take a 20 question quiz on JEE Mains inorganic chemistry exception questions to understand the type of questions and difficulty level:
What Is an 'Exception' in JEE Mains Inorganic Chemistry?
Normally, periodic trends follow simple rules:
-
Atomic radius increases as you go down a group
-
Ionisation energy decreases as you go down a group
-
Electron affinity is usually highest for elements at the top of a group
But in real atoms, other effects can change these rules. These are called 'exceptions'. The exceptions happen due to the following reasons:
Lanthanoid Contraction
The 4f electrons in lanthanides don't shield the nucleus very well. Because of this, when you reach the 5d elements, their size becomes almost the same as the 4d elements above them. Example: Zirconium (Zr) and Hafnium (Hf) have nearly identical size.
Interelectronic Repulsion
In small atoms like Oxygen or Fluorine, electrons are packed very close together. When you add one more electron, the repulsion is very strong. This is why Chlorine actually releases more energy than Fluorine when it gains an electron (Chlorine has more negative electron gain enthalpy than Fluorine).
Inert Pair Effect
In heavier p-block elements (like Tl, Pb, Bi), the outer s-electrons don't like to take part in bonding. This makes the lower oxidation state more stable. Example: Tl+ is more stable than Tl3+, and Pb2+ is more stable than Pb4+.
Back Bonding and Hydration Effects
Some trends only make sense once you consider back bonding or hydration. For example, BF3 is a weaker Lewis acid than BCl3 or BBr3, even though fluorine is the most electronegative halogen - because of back bonding (explained below). Similarly, Lithium has the most negative reduction potential of the alkali metals, not because of ionisation energy, but because of its very high hydration enthalpy.
How Much Weightage Do Inorganic Chemistry Exceptions Get in JEE Main?
Inorganic Chemistry in JEE Main exam usually makes up 25-30% of the Chemistry section, which is about 7-9 questions per shift.
| Topic |
Usual Number of Questions |
Common Exception Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Periodic Properties |
1-2 |
Ionisation energy order (B vs Be, N vs O, Tl vs In), electron gain enthalpy |
| p-Block Elements |
2-3 |
Acid strength of boron halides, phosphorus/sulfur oxoacids, inert pair effect |
| d- and f-Block Elements |
2 |
Odd electronic configurations (Cr, Cu, Mo, Pd), oxidation states, magnetic moment |
| Coordination Compounds |
2-3 |
Back bonding, spectrochemical series exceptions, Jahn-Teller distortion |
Roughly 30-40% of all Inorganic Chemistry questions in a paper are based on these trend-breaking exceptions, either directly or indirectly.
Commonly asked questions
As per the analysis of JEE Main marks vs percentile, 120 marks would be around 95 to 97 percentile.
No. There is no qualifying percentile in JEE Main. However, the candidates who want to appear in JEE Advanced will have to get a minimum qualifying percentile in JEE Mains. This minimum qualifying percentile is announced with the JEE Main session 2 reult.
The JEE Main cutoff is the minimum percentile score required to qualify for the JEE Advanced exam. Its is released with the April session result.

Types of Questions Asked from Inorganic Chemistry Exceptions in JEE Mains
NTA usually frames the following types of questions in JEE Mains exam:
-
Ordering Questions: Arrange elements/compounds by ionisation energy, stability, or bond strength. Example: halogen bond strength order is Cl2 > Br2 > F2 > I2.
-
Assertion-Reason: The question states the exception as the "Assertion" and asks you to identify the correct reason (like poor shielding) as the "Reason."
-
Match the Column / True-False Statements: You will be asked to judge statements like "basic strength of lanthanide hydroxides increases down the series" or identify a metal with an unusual electrode potential.
-
Count the Correct Statements: You are given 4 - 5 statements, and some are based on classic exceptions (like Be(OH)2 being amphoteric), and you must count how many are true.

How to Study Inorganic Chemistry Exceptions Effectively for JEE Main 2027
Below are some tips to study the exception question effectively:
- Always link the exception to its cause: Do not just memorise an exception by itself. Connect it to the reason, like shielding, effective nuclear charge, exchange energy, or hydration enthalpy. If you know the cause, you can figure out the exception even if you forget it.
- Make a short "Exceptions List": Keep a 1 to 2 page list, organised by property, such as:
- Ionization energy: Ga > Al, Tl > In
- Electron gain enthalpy: S > O, Cl > F
- Bond dissociation energy: Cl2 > Br2 > F2 > I2
- Use elimination in MCQs: In many options, one normal element is mixed with an exception. If you can quickly spot which pair is the "wrong-looking but correct" one, you can eliminate 2 of the 4 options immediately.
- Focus on NCERT tables: JEE Main often picks numbers directly from NCERT data tables, so go through them carefully, especially the footnotes.
