Placement Assistance: Bridging the Gender Gap
While changing admission policies are crucial, many top B-schools have also introduced dedicated placement assistance programs to ensure that female students have equal access to high-quality job opportunities. Leading institutions are increasingly partnering with companies to create internships and job roles tailored for women, helping to mitigate the challenges women face in securing competitive positions in the corporate world.
Mentorship Programs for Female Candidates at IIM Indore
At IIM Indore, female students benefit from mentorship programs, networking groups, and career counseling aimed at boosting their employability. Female students are actively encouraged to explore diverse career options, including traditionally male-dominated fields such as logistics, supply chain management, and general management. Through collaboration with companies that prioritize gender diversity, IIM Indore ensures that female candidates are placed in roles that match their qualifications, and they are offered salary packages on par with their male counterparts.
The institute’s efforts extend beyond career support. IIM Indore's unique initiatives like sports tournaments for women, including football and frisbee, as well as specialized workshops and leadership training, foster a sense of community and empowerment for female students. The campus also offers practical amenities, such as sanitary napkin vending machines, which reflect the school’s commitment to supporting female students' health and well-being.
“To actively support and encourage female participation at IIM Indore, we have introduced a ‘Diversity Factor’ in our MBA admission process, allocating 6 out of 100 points specifically for female candidates and non-engineering students in the composite score calculation. This initiative reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive environment,” said IIM Indore Director Professor Himanshu Rai.
The Professor further inform that since the introduction of the Diversity Factor in 2015, IIM Indore has significantly increased female representation in its Post Graduate Programme (PGP) and Post Graduate Programme in Human Resource Management (PGPHRM), with female participants averaging 37% over the past five years. Notably, the PGPHRM program has seen a remarkable 74% female representation on average, reaching 97% in recent cohorts. IIM Indore fosters a supportive environment through initiatives like faculty mentorship, specialized workshops, women’s sports events, and health-focused amenities like sanitary napkin vending machines. Additionally, the institute offers exclusive awards for female achievers, such as the K K Alagh Gold Medal and IIM Indore Scholastic Gold Medal, further reinforcing its commitment to gender inclusivity and empowering women in management education.
Placement Strategies Enhancing Gender Diversity
At Great Lakes, gender diversity is embedded not just in admissions but also in placement strategies. Yash Merchant, Director of Brand Marketing at Great Lakes, shares that the institute's placement outcomes reflect its commitment to gender parity. "Female students at Great Lakes have consistently secured competitive roles in consulting, finance, technology, and marketing, with compensation packages comparable to, and in many cases higher than, those of their male peers," he says.
Great Lakes ensures that female students are empowered during the placement process through specialized workshops on skills such as negotiation, personal branding, and career planning. These workshops help female students navigate recruitment processes confidently, ensuring they are prepared to secure leadership roles. Moreover, strong partnerships with companies that prioritize gender diversity enhance opportunities for female students, fast-tracking them into leadership positions.
Meanwhile, IIM Raipur also emphasizes gender parity in its placement process. According to Professor Kakani, “Our placement outcomes for female students have been on par with, and in some cases better than, their male counterparts. We work closely with industry partners to ensure that women have access to high-impact job opportunities.” These efforts, combined with dedicated career support services, help to ensure that female students have an equal shot at leadership roles in the corporate world.
Empowering Women: Initiatives to Strengthen Female Leadership
A key factor in improving gender diversity within MBA programs is creating an environment that empowers women throughout their academic journey. Several B-schools are not just admitting women but actively working to ensure their success once they enroll.
IIM Indore stands out for its commitment to women’s leadership. The institution introduced a ‘Diversity Factor’ in its MBA admission process in 2015, allocating specific points for female candidates, which has contributed to a steady increase in female representation. Over the past five years, female participation in IIM Indore's Post Graduate Programme (PGP) has averaged 37%, reaching as high as 40% in the 2020-22 batch. In the Post Graduate Programme in Human Resource Management (PGPHRM), female representation has been even more remarkable, with the most recent cohorts seeing up to 97% female participation.
These initiatives are not just about numbers; they are about fostering an environment where women can thrive. Workshops, seminars, and leadership training programs focused on negotiation skills, entrepreneurship, and women’s leadership are a regular feature of many B-schools, ensuring that female students are equipped to succeed in male-dominated industries.
IIM Raipur’s Efforts to Empower Women
IIM Raipur also prioritizes women’s leadership development through a variety of initiatives. The institute offers a mentor-mentee program where each female student is paired with a mentor who provides guidance on both academic and professional matters. Additionally, IIM Raipur offers access to psychological counseling and regular medical visits, including gynecological support, to ensure that female students’ mental and physical well-being is cared for. "These support systems help female students to focus on their academic and professional goals with confidence," says Professor Kakani.
Empowerment Initiatives
At Great Lakes, Chennai, the institute’s focus on women’s leadership is clear through its comprehensive mentorship programs, financial support through exclusive scholarships, and women-centric events. Yash Merchant highlights the "Successful Women in Management (SWIM)" event as one of the key platforms that brings together students, alumnae, and industry leaders. “At SWIM, we have had speakers like Indra Nooyi, Preetha Reddy, and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who inspire our students and help them connect with leaders in the field,” says Merchant. These events play a critical role in empowering female students, and helping them build networks that will benefit them throughout their careers.
Measuring Impact: Metrics for Assessing Gender Diversity
The commitment to gender diversity at these institutions is not just theoretical. Many B-schools, including IIM Indore, IIM Raipur, Great Lakes, Jaipuria, etc. have put in place comprehensive mechanisms to track and measure the impact of their diversity initiatives. These include analyzing gender ratios across cohorts, leadership roles, club participation, and career outcomes.
IIM Indore employs a data-driven approach to evaluate the effectiveness of its gender diversity strategies. Performance metrics like CGPA, internships, and placement outcomes are analyzed to ensure that gender diversity is correlated with improved academic and career success. In addition, qualitative feedback from students and faculty is gathered through surveys to assess how gender diversity impacts group dynamics, classroom discussions, and overall engagement in the learning process.
At IIM Raipur, feedback mechanisms and student surveys help assess the effectiveness of gender diversity initiatives. According to Professor Kakani, insights from students and faculty regarding classroom engagement, collaboration levels, and overall inclusivity help refine and improve these initiatives over time.
Jaipuria Institute of Management: A Holistic Approach to Gender Diversity
Jaipuria has seen consistent efforts to increase female participation through initiatives like school and college outreach drives and merit-based scholarships specifically for women. Professor Dr Daviender Narang, Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indirapuram, emphasizes that a diverse and inclusive learning environment enhances the educational experience. "At Jaipuria, we actively encourage female participation through targeted outreach programs and scholarships, as well as hosting industry talks with female leaders," he shares. These programs are aimed at inspiring and guiding aspiring women managers, while also raising awareness of the value of management education for women.
Lessons Learned from Diversity Initiatives
Professor Narang reflects on the positive cultural shifts that have resulted from these initiatives. "Diverse classrooms foster richer discussions, collaborative learning, and a more empathetic understanding of global business dynamics," he notes. This inclusive environment contributes to shaping graduates who are well-prepared to take on leadership roles in diverse workplaces, making them more adaptable and better equipped for global challenges.
G D Goenka University: Promoting Gender Equity Across Campus
Professor (Dr) Anuradha R. Tiwary, Registrar at G D Goenka University in Gurugram, highlights the university's strong commitment to gender equity and its comprehensive approach to fostering a gender-neutral environment. "We place a high premium on best practices in the education sector and regard gender equality as a UNESCO priority," she says. The university works tirelessly to ensure that women and men receive equal opportunities in academic recruitment, as well as in extracurricular activities and leadership roles.
A key initiative at G D Goenka University is its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment, supported by a robust security system that includes extensive CCTV surveillance across sensitive campus locations. Additionally, the university maintains separate common rooms for male and female students, ensuring that both genders have equal access to comfortable and safe spaces.
