Aftermath of JEE Advanced 2025: 10% to Take a Drop Year, 18% Score 300+ Marks; Reveals Shiksha Poll

IIT Kanpur held the JEE Advanced 2025 exam on May 18 and announced the results on June 2. A total of 54,378 students passed this year’s exam. Out of the 2,50,236 JEE Main 2025 candidates who qualified to take the JEE Advanced, 1,87,223 registered and 1,80,422 took both papers of the exam. This year, 400 new seats have been added across the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), making a total of 18,160 seats available through the JoSAA counselling process.

After the results were released, Shiksha.com wanted to find out what steps the aspirants plan to take next. To gather opinions, we conducted two polls, the results of which are explained below.

Shiksha Poll: How much did you score in JEE Advanced 2025?

On June 2, when the results were announced, Shiksha asked the candidates about their scores in the JEE Advanced exam.

  • 18% of the candidates reported scoring over 300 marks.
  • 8% scored between 250 and 300 marks.
  • Only 6% managed to score between 200 and 250 marks.
  • A significant portion, 23%, scored between 100 and 200 marks.
  • However, the majority, 44% of the candidates, said that their scores were below 100 marks.

This breakdown gives us a clear picture of how the candidates performed overall.

Shiksha Poll: JEE Advanced 2025 result out. What do you plan to do next?

We also asked the IIT aspirants what their plans are after the JEE Advanced results. We gave the following options:

  1. Start preparing for JoSAA counselling and IIT admissions
  2. Explore other top engineering colleges like IIITs, NITs, and private institutes
  3. Consider studying abroad for engineering or related fields
  4. Take a drop year and reattempt JEE Advanced next year
  5. Still undecided, exploring all possible options

Out of all the candidates who participated in the poll, 50% said that they will be participating in JoSAA 2025 counselling and preparing for IIT admission. This means 50% of the candidates have achieved JEE Advanced 2025 ranks and are thus eligible for IIT admissions.

On the other hand, 26% of the candidates will be exploring other top engineering colleges like IIITs, NITs, and private institutes. This group of candidates either could not qualify JEE Advanced or have dropped the plan to pursue IIT admissions.

11% of the candidates are still unsure of their next move, while 4% of the candidates might look for other courses or consider studying abroad.

The remaining 10% of the candidates are looking forward to giving the IIT JEE another shot next year and hence, are planning to take a gap year.

For this year, JEE Advanced 2025 and JEE Main 2025 counselling processes have begun. JoSAA counselling registrations and choice filling are ongoing at josaa.nic.in and will be available until June 12.
