JEE Main Application form 2026 for session 1 closed on November 27, 2025. According to some media reports, a record 14.5 lakh candidates have applied for the JEE Mains 2026 session 1 exam. This is the highest number of candidates applying for the exam ever. However, the actual JEE Main 2026 registered candidates will be announced by NTA once the exam is over. Considering the previous year trends, it was certain that JEE Main 2026 registration will see more than 13 lakh candidates. In JEE Main 2025 session 1 exam, a total of 13.11 lakh students registered out of which 12.58 lakh appeared in the exam.
JEE Main is a national level engineering entrance exam in which millions of students appear every year to grab a seat in top engineering colleges of India. It is the exam conducted primarily for admission in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs however, the JEE Main 2026 exam score is accepted in many top colleges besides NIT, IIIT and GFTI. It is also one of the most competitive exams in India with success rate around 15-20%.

No, candidates can not upload black & white photograph in JEE Mains application form.
- Photograph should be in JPEG/JPG format
- Dimention has to be 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm
- Size has to be 10 KB to 200 KB
Also, the photograph should be clear with white background. The candidates are allowed to have spectacles in the photograph but sunglasses and caps are not allowed.
If candidates are facing issue in live photo capture, it can be due to mismatch from photo uploaded in Aadhar. For this, they need to visit the Aadhar update centre and get their current photo updated in the Aadhaar database.
The issue can also be due to any servor error/slow internet connectivity for which candidates can try uploading it after some time. Also, there can be a case of laptop/computer not supporting the webcame, for this, candidates can upload the photo using QR code provided in the application process.
The last date to complete the JEE Main session 2 registration was February 25.
JEE Main Registration Trends: Number of Candidates Increasing Every Year
The number of candidates applying for JEE Mains exam is rising every year. In 2025, total number of candidates who appeared in both session 1 and 2 exam was 22.50 lakh, an increase of around 3.5 lakh from the previous year (2024). In 2023, the total number of candidates who appeared in both sessions was around 17 lakh, which increased to around 19 lakh in 2024. Every year, the number of candidates appearing in JEE Mains exam witnessed a growth of around 15%.

JEE Main exam is widely accepted as the benchmark for admission in top engineering institutes in India. The popularity of this exam is mostly due to the institutes which offers admission based on its scores. Top rankers of this exam are sure to get admission in institutes like NITs. The top 2.5 lakh candidates in order of merit also get the chance to appear in JEE Advanced exam for admission to IITs.
