How is CLAT Rank calculated?

Candidates can check the CLAT Rank through these steps to understand which NLU they can get.

  • Calculating the Raw Score

Based on the marking scheme, i.e., one mark for a correct answer and -0.25 for each wrong attempt, the raw score is calculated. For example, if a candidate answers 100 questions correctly and 20 incorrectly out of 150, the score will be

Raw Score = (100 × 1) – (20 × 0.25) = 100 – 5 = 95

  • Merit List

The consortium will then prepare a merit list based on the raw scores of all candidates. The one with the highest score will be marked Rank 1 and so on.

  • Tie-breaking Rule

In case, two or more candidates score the same marks in CLAT 2027, the consortium will follow the sequence given below to decide the merit rank:

CLAT Exam Tie-breaker Rule
CLAT UG

The tie will be decided in the following sequence

  1. Higher marks in the legal aptitude section of CLAT 2026
  2. Higher age
  3. Computerised draw of lots.
CLAT PG

The tie will be decided in the following sequence:

  1. Higher age
  2. Computerised draw of lots
  • Predict NLU

Based on the CLAT Raw Score, candidates can get an idea which NLU they might get. Candidates can use Shiksha's free CLAT College Predictor tool too to know the same.
